Very smart move by Microsoft.
Having developed with Microsoft mobile platforms since CE 1.0, I've never found them to really understand mobile that well. Kind of ironic that their greatest financial success could potentially now be for them to do nothing other than collect royalty payments!

Microsoft has also sued Motorola for infringing on their tech so they will most probabily pony up some money soon as well for every android handset they will sell. Google does not protects it's OEM partner's from any lawsuits. They IP portfolio is very weak.
