Microsoft SideWinder: What a mouse!!

By Peter Csorba, in , posted: 22-Aug-2007 19:11

As you might know I like playing online games. Actually I am addicted.
Besides the good PC (which I dont have at the moment) a good peripherial, like a mouse could do a lot to become a better player.

I used a Logitech MX-518, which has been already designed for gaming and then this year I bought a Razer Copperhead mouse, which is one of the best for this purpose (I think, from my experience).

I was not surprised when Microsoft co-operated with Razer and introduced the Habu mouse earlier. (which was tested by freitasm too here on GZ).

And now I am reading this on Reuters.com:

Microsoft targets hard-core gamers with new mouse

SEATTLE (Reuters) - Microsoft Corp. (MSFT.O: Quote, Profile, Research) said on Tuesday it plans to introduce a computer mouse designed for PC gaming, in an effort to capture a growing segment of the computer peripheral equipment market.
Microsoft's new SideWinder mouse, which will target hard-core computer video game fans, allows nearly 5,000 different adjustable settings, including weight, materials and touch.

The new mouse comes with a small liquid crystal display between the thumb and index finger to keep track of game functions and settings.

Executives at Microsoft said computer gaming is growing rapidly and sales of mice catered to video game use has increased at a double-digit pace. Rivals Logitech and Razer Group also manufacture computer mice for video games.

The SideWinder mouse will sell for $79.95 when it becomes available in October.

After a little search I found this picture and a small briefing on Microsoft.com:

Elevate your skills with a revolutionary mouse designed to provide you with unprecedented performance, handling, and adaptability. Customize your mouse with every game you play using advanced software and adjustable accessories. Use the first ever LCD display on a gaming mouse for macro recording and DPI settings to reduce on-screen interference during game play.

It looks stunning, hopefully the build quality is up there and the wheel has a stiff click when scrolling.

I'd certainly look at one as my faithful super bargain $10 DSE one is starting to wear out.

The phrase "surfing the Internet" was first popularized in print by Jean Armour Polly, a librarian, in an article called Surfing the INTERNET, published in the University of Minnesota Wilson Library Bulletin in June, 1992. Although Polly may have developed the phrase independently, slightly earlier uses of similar terms have been found on the Usenet from 1991 and 1992, and some recollections claim it was also used verbally in the hacker community for a couple years before that. Polly is famous as "NetMom" in the history of the Internet.
