Nokia Maps application has been updated

By Peter Csorba, in , posted: 31-Aug-2007 15:06

Get your latest version from here:

http://maps.nokia.com/

You can download the latest Nokia Maps application (.sis) for your NSeries mobile (including N95 of course) and you can download and install the latest Nokia Map Loader software on your PC.

3 days free navigation trial included!

Improved view on your mobile:

In the bottom right corner you can see the map provider: either it's Navteq or TeleAtlas.

New Zealand is still listed under non-navigable maps unfortunately, but let's hope it will be changed with the planned map upgrades.

The site is saying also that the maps will be upgraded twice a year.

Let me quote that:

"The map data will be updated twice a year. You can check for map updates in the Nokia Maps application through Options > Settings > Network > Options > Check for map Updates. If there is a new release of map data, the application will prompt you to delete the preloaded map data. You can then download the new map data via mobile internet or Wi-Fi (data transfer costs may arise).

If the map data is updated, the application will display Your current maps are up to date.

If you do not avail of this functionality, the application will go on downloading data from the map data releases that were downloaded when using the application for the first time."

Great site with great content! Bring on the new maps Nokia!

Oh yes I forgot to mention: this application is for those who has built in GPS (like N95) or external GPS connected to use with their Nokia phones.

*UPDATE on 7.55PM 31/08/07:
I had a little play with it and found the followings so far:

- My N95 didnt lock the satellites after the Nokia Maps upgrade. I had to restart the phone, after it worked fine

- The new Map Loader sw every time I start it says "There is a newer version available: 1.2.1. Then it starts downloading it and immediately stops with the following error message: "Downloaded file is corrupted. Try again later". Huh? After this incident the sw starts and the version number is 1.2

- It seems that the new version of Nokia Maps application doesnt have the tracking function any more. Bad news.

LOL After the upgrade I am experiencing a liiiitle problem, my N95 doesnt want to lock onto the satellites, however I see their bar being black in the satellite view in the menu, which means it's locked.

Also when I am opening the Map Loader sw on my PC it says it will download the newest 1.2.1 version, but the download stops after few seconds saying: the download file corrupted. Ooops! :)

If you go to Navigate then Cancel when asks you to Purchase Navigate it goes into Tracking Mode.

(but no blue line anymore).

Careful with updating Maps. It took 3 attempts to get all the data (England) into Nokia Maps using the new MapLoader 1.2.1 - it seemed to cut off data.

Loading Countries individually seemed to work.

A-GPS will cost you money - but a very small amount of data is used to communicate with the Nokia Servers.

Pre-Loaded Maps and creating a route is much quicker than before.

Thanks Mapperz.

True, true, no more blue line. That's not good as we dont have navigation and detailed maps here in NZ yet. At least we could follow the blue line, but now that one has disappeared too. :)

(I dont worry about the A-GPS data usage as I am on a 2GB data mobile plan.)

On my N95 I also downloaded the latest Nokia Maps and Maploader. Now I don't see any landscape or roads. The GPS picks up after a minute, but shows an empty country (the Netherlands).

Sequence:
- deleted all maps using the previous version of Maploader
- installed the new Nokia Maps
- installed the new Maploader
- downloaded and installed the Netherlands

Any hints or tips on how the see the map again ?

Did you try to download the maps again with Map Loader? You have to start the GPS first in the phone before downloading maps, because the GPS application creates a folder on your memory card where the maps will be saved later.

Navigation is a service you have to pay for. For more information how to use your your N95 visit www.geekzone.co.nz and you will find a lot of threads in the Forum section where people explains how to use your phone.

It was one of the reasons to purchase the N95, maps and gps tracking. Now that this feature is removed, I have lost one of the main reasons for having this phone. It saved me in Europe this summer travelling. Luckily i didn't upgrade before I left.

Now that I have, I cannot use the GPS/maps, it's a waste of technology now.

The phrase "surfing the Internet" was first popularized in print by Jean Armour Polly, a librarian, in an article called Surfing the INTERNET, published in the University of Minnesota Wilson Library Bulletin in June, 1992. Although Polly may have developed the phrase independently, slightly earlier uses of similar terms have been found on the Usenet from 1991 and 1992, and some recollections claim it was also used verbally in the hacker community for a couple years before that. Polly is famous as "NetMom" in the history of the Internet.
