Blog about anything you like! Having a theme for your blog helps build readership though, and also makes it easier for you to think up new posts.
If you reference other blogs and bloggers, let them know by using the Trackback feature. Most blogs have a Trackback or Pingback URI that you can use to let them blog owners you've read and are referencing their posts.
Link to other blogs and sources in your blog posts. This is important so that your readers can see where your material comes from. Link love is good! Other bloggers will notice the traffic coming from your blog, and and you'll be remembered.
Be careful when post not to quote copyrighted material wholesale. This is illegal, and could land you in some very hot water. Fair Use says you can quote excerpts of copyrighted material however, to go with what you write.
Don't forget to use the "quote" ([ quote ] and [ /quote ] without the spaces) feature and images for greater emphasis – these are especially good for longer posts.
Spend a bit of time figuring out how the "mini-icons" in the blog for social bookmarking services work. They're useful to spread knowledge about your blog and its content.
