Apple iPhone Receives FCC

By Gary R, in , posted: 18-May-2007 16:04

The iPhone has been granted FCC approval under number BCGA1203. FCC approves things like SAR (Specific Absorption Rate) which is the measure of radiation through soft tissue (like your head). On the cellular side this particular FCC grant only covers 850MHz and 1900MHz (GPRS) which are the frequencies used by Cingular in the US. This does however mean that the current approved iPhone will not work in NZ as Vodafone uses 900/1800MHz. You would then have to assume that Apple will be producing another version for Europe. It is a pity that they didn't have the foresight to produce a quad band phone or maybe it is a cunning plan. Limiting it to the US market to start with will stop parallel exporting/importing, etc.

Once an FCC approval is granted you can normally publicly view all supporting documentation which does include external/internal pictures and the user manual. Unfortunately, the FCC has agreed to the Apple request for confidentiality so that none of this information will be released for 45 days after the FCC is granted. By my calculation that is around the end of June.

Dual band GSM radios are so 1990's! I thought the iPhone was supposed to be the latest technology?

They didn't have the foresight to create WCDMA phone, for goodness sake. EDGE? Yeah, right...
