Reported on Stuff today the research is claimed to have implications for our sovereignty but that is only a part of the picture and I am surprised that our economic wellbeing was not also included as an issue. I am thinking about who I have transacted recently with online and most of the services are based off-shore with no direct presence in NZ. Therefore no tax, no GST, no local employees and no benefit to our economy. Amazon is a classic example of a store I use for books simply because they have everything I have ever wanted. Ebay is another website I have used regularly because it has much more choice than TradeMe. In the last year I would estimate that over 80% of my online transactions were made with overseas companies.
The Greens need to think beyond the 'Buy NZ Made' campaign, an update for the 21st century would appropriately be called 'Buy from NZ Hosted'.
