The ones who really get on my wick are the various organisations who phone me at home inevitably during tea time wanting me to take part in a survey, donate money to some charity or are offering me cheap toll calls, insurance, credit card, finance, etc, etc, etc. Then every day along Courtney Place in Wellington is 'save the world mile' with the Greenpeace, Amnesty International, Save the Children, Save the Dolphins, Save the Planet and Save Your Soul crowd trying to buy your support using the psychology of guilt spiel. Greenpeace are the classic example with lines like 'Do you want to save the planet?' or 'Don't you care about the environment?'. My reply to them is always the same 'I do not support eco-terrorists' and 'I do not give money to any organisation that pays people commissions to collect 'donations''. Then every Friday we have 'fleece the worker day' with some charity out rattling the collection box. They eye ball you, rattle the box as you walk past and sometimes even try to engage in conversation.
If I was an MP I would do something useful and propose a private members bill called the Unsolicited Communication, Contact and Harassment Act. Quite simply it would make it illegal to do this:
- Do not phone me or send me mail if you do not know me and if I have not given you my permission to do so
- If you are a street collector do not look at me, rattle your collection box in my direction, say 'hello' or make any form of contact what so ever.
The classic recent example of unsolicited bollocks came courtesy of Wellington Central MP Marion Hobbs. Ms Hobbs sent me not one but two letters to my home personally addressed to myself and my wife. These letters (both the same) listed all the great things Labour has done (point by point) and invited me to respond to Marion via an email address. Of course I did respond. I told Marion to never, ever send me any Labour propaganda again and how dear she assume that I would be even remotely interested in what she had to say when none of the mentioned policies were of any benefit to myself or my family. I went on to explain how the Labour brand of Socialism is fundamentally flawed and I even gave her permission to respond to my email. She never got back to me.

I doubt you'd ever hear from politicians. They (their drones) might reply to you if you say how great they are, but otherwise...
