While BellSouth's handsets may have been dire (except for the 2110) the quality of their network in Wgtn wasn't too bad. It was possible to hold a call while driving all the way from Upper Hutt to Wgtn and then to Porirua on BellSouth ~ 1996, something that was not possible with Telecom at the time.
Then along came Vodafone who attempted to reconfigure the network and screw this up meaning this wasn't possible for many years!
