Free online charting web application (Gliffy.com)

, posted: 18-Jan-2007 12:49

So we had this topic in the Geekzone forum [What's your LAN like?]. And a few of the members have really cool diagram (using Visio) and some even got nice icons/images, some are pretty basic. Regardless, everyone did a pretty good job to show how their LAN is set up/connect up. As for mine, I don't have Visio installed and I don't want to go through the length of installing Visio just so I can show my network diagram... So off I went to search for free charting program. I spotted a few, but Gliffy is the one that caught my attention. The slogan pretty much says what I am looking for, "Create and share diagrams online". How awesome is that! So I signed up, and did a spiffy quick job of my home network diagram, save and publish it. Very straight forward and easy to use. The main program is Flash driven and it has good responseness. The tools are quite limited but it suffice my requirement. I had to improvise a few of the "icons" though but that's the show of creativeness in you... so explore all possiblity. You can save it online in Gliffy.com, or export as SVG, JPG or PNG. And you can collaborate with another user, or publish online. I chose publish online, and you can copy the JavaScript code that it supplied, or copy the links for different sizes. What is even neater is that, when you make changes to one of the published document, it automatically get updated in all the location that you have published to. Very cool! I hope this online service stays on, one would wonder whether Google will be offering something similar to this, or just gobble up Gliffy.com like it did with Writely? Hmmm

I'm wondering if I should ask for royalties... oh I mean if I should update my diagram to make it look as nice as everyone elses

You should check out LucidChart.com! It's Gliffy, but done right--and without Flash. Real-time collaboration actually works well, and the publishing features are quite a bit more robust.
