[Update] MS Office Outlook Connector beta for WLHotmail

, posted: 23-Aug-2007 10:20

Seems like Microsoft has return the Outlook Connector for Windows Live Hotmail back as free tool. Years ago, Outlook Connector was free to all user, and was available from Outlook 97, 2000, 2002. Then Microsoft decided to change that and made it available to Hotmail Plus and MSN8 subscribers. Luckily those old/long-time Hotmail users were able to keep using it without difficulty, but all new Hotmail users/accounts created after 2003 were not able to use this feature. Fast forward to 2007, Microsoft has launched Windows Live Hotmail, with features similar or on-par with Google's Mail, or Yahoo!Mail and not to lose out, they also match 2GB storage. With Outlook Connector coming back as free tool, this may help Microsoft to push WLHotmail further with more integrated usage. This maybe a "little too late", but with new feature like integrate contact management from Outlook, and automatic synchronisation with web version whenever there's changes made. Pair this together using ActiveSync and Windows Mobile, you could effectively have an all round integrated Email/Contact with you wherever you go, whether you have your WM device with your or not. I have asked about this years ago and finally to see it is here, sure it was a bit slow.. better late than never I'd say. Update: Office Outlook Connector for Windows Live Hotmail [FREE]

This was announced a couple of months ago... But where is the download?

True, interesting... All I know is I got the news from my WL Hotmail newsletter. Surely it should be there... somewhere... hehe

I am not sure I will install this... It synchronises the Windows Live Mail with Outlook. But unless it comes with an option to prevent this happening, I don't want my WLM contacts flowing into my Exchange contact list.

This would be too messy - exactly like Windows Live for Mobile, which only allows you to log into Windows Live Messenger on your Pocket PC if you synchronise the contacts to your handheld, which in turn go to the Exchange server. But there's a reason why people in my Windows Live Messenger are not in my Outlook/Exchange, and I want them that way...

I managed to track down the Microsoft Office Outlook Connector as mentioned in the updated section of the blog. As to whether it will sync the contacts from WLHotmail to Outlook, which is Exchange connected, that I'm not sure... I supposed I could try it with my setup and see how it works... expect a report from me in the next few days. :-S

I'm glad so many people are excited about the connector. Just to clarify for everyone, the version that will be free for all our Hotmail and Outlook customers will be available for download any day now. The version currently available will only work for users with paid MSN Premium or Office Live Essentials or Office Live Premium accounts. - Jared Brown [MSFT]

This link is for the wrong connector. It requires a subscribption. The latest connector should be free.

Thanks Jared for clarifying that. Can you please post a link or message here when the Office Outlook Connector is ready to download? I am excited about it, as I see that there are many people who do use Windows Live Hotmail, and currently is confined to Internet (online) access only, or using Windows Live Mail beta. And good portion of people are starting to use Windows Mobile devices, and any smartphone that sync with Outlook. The missing link here is, getting the same information sync with their WL Hotmail. Using Office Outlook Connector will help bridging that gap and allow the user to sync from smartphone, to Outlook, to Windows Live Hotmail, and all point stay consistent. This is how integration should be! And I'm glad it is coming back soon!
