Company Shows Linux Smartphone With GSM and Wi-Fi Roaming

BridgePort Networks and E28 Limited will be demonstrating the seamless handover of calls between live GSM and Wi-Fi networks at the 3GSM World Congress 2006, in Barcelona, Spain.

Using BridgePort Networks' NomadicONE IMS Convergence Server (ICS) the handover method conforms to IMS technical requirements recently defined by 3GPP, known as Voice Call Continuity (VCC). The E28 smartphones are low cost, dual-mode handsets suitable for mass-market use to demonstrate SIP-based MobileVoIP call handover.

The companies have integrated E28's Linux-based smartphone designs into BridgePort Networks' MobileVoIP network solution for service providers.

As a smartphone provider, E28 offers Linux Mobile smart information device solutions that can then be customized to meet the service provider's market needs, including user interface and form factor. The candy-bar phones are tri-band GSM/GPRS (900/1800/1900 MHz and 850/1800/1900MHZ) and also support Wi-Fi 802.11b.

The smart phones come with a touchscreen and optional key pad, resulting in a small size dual-mode device. The phones deliver three hours of talk time (on either Wi-Fi VoIP or GSM) and 72 hours of standby time.

The E28 also feature multimedia capabilities, including 2.0 megapixel camera, video recording and playback on a 2.2 QVGA LCM, MP3 player, picture address book, PIM functionality, SMS and MMS, web browser (HTML and WAP 2.0), J2ME, email (POP, SMTP, eSMTP) and a microSD external memory slot.

This may take some time to get to the market... In the meantime you could look at some Windows Mobile Pocket PC or Windows Mobile Smartphones?

There are some converged devices in the USA with EDGE (HTC Wizard or CDMA EVDO (HTC Apache).

All these devices are currently "concept". There are lots of Linux based smartphones, but most of them are available in China only...

Also, GSM/Wi-Fi roaming requires UMA, which most operators have not implemented yet.

Do you know of any high-end smartphone that syncs with linux, thunderbird/evolution (or any e-mail client) and that is available in Europe?
