The Nokia N97 introduces social features and advanced technology to S60

Nokia has unveiled the Nokia N97, claiming it to be the world's most advanced mobile computer. The Nokia N97 combines a large 3.5" touch display with a full QWERTY keyboard, providing an 'always open' window to social networking sites and Internet destinations.

"From the desktop to the laptop and now to your pocket, the Nokia N97 is the most powerful, multi-sensory mobile computer in existence," said Jonas Geust, Vice President, heading Nokia Nseries. "Together with the Ovi services announced today, the Nokia N97 mobile computer adjusts to the world around us, helping stay connected to the people and things that matter most. With the Nokia N97, Nseries leads the charge in helping to transform the Internet into your Internet".

The Nokia N97 introduces the concept of 'social location'. With integrated A-GPS sensors and an electronic compass, the Nokia N97 mobile computer understands where it is. The Nokia N97 makes it easy to update social networks automatically with real-time information, giving approved friends the ability to update their 'status' and share their 'social location' as well as related pictures or videos.

The home screen of the Nokia N97 mobile computer features friends, social networks and news, available by simply touching the home screen. The 16:9 widescreen display can be fully personalized with frequently updated widgets of favorite web services and social networking sites.

The Nokia N97 supports up to 48 GB of storage, including 32 GB of on-board memory, expandable with a 16 GB microSD card for music, media and more. This is complemented by excellent music capabilities, full support for the Nokia Music Store and continuous playback time of up to 1.5 days. The Nokia N97 also has a 5-Megapixel camera with high-quality Carl Zeiss optics, 16:9 and DVD quality video capture, and support for services like Share on Ovi for immediate sharing over HSDPA and WLAN.

The new device N97 is expected to begin shipping in the first half of 2009 at an estimated retail price of EUR 550 before taxes or subsidies.

Its got my vote...has everything I want and more...

I especially love the customizable Home Screen and widgets.

Short of something better coming out before then, I am buying one on its release.

The design looks like a rip-off from HTC TYTNII. Once again Nokia is putting it's marketing mite to promote "the best phone in the world". Wasn't the N95 "the best phone in the world" at it's release too? The only thing I see as groundbreaking in this phone is the 32GB built in memory... but that won't be so expensive in 6 months time. All the other features are currently available on any phone with a web browser and a high speed data connection. And how much is all that "always on" data going to cost on the vodafone network?!!

Has anybody seen the full official specs? Battery life will be the main issue IMO

Calm down young fulla, take a chill pill.

Thats just marketing...any company is going to say thier new flagship product is the latest and greatest.

As for the design...there is only so many form factors available...of course its likely going to look like someone elses design, because every logical form factor has already been done.

As for the 'always on' data...likely here in New Zealand, Vodafone will force people to go on a data plan like the iPhone, and will charge users for data used by those widgets...they will make sure they don't loose on the deal...its a good point to make though...what will that cost the user? (in data charges)

Time will tell.

Wow.That is a STUNNING piece of equipment...My N95 is quite enough for me at the moment though. Now I haven't heard or seen anything about the N96 coming out over here - what's that about??I'd been waiting for it for awhile, just so I could SEE it, but I haven't seen any advertising for it at all!Oh well.

I quite like this new Nokia. It's toss-up between this, the N85 and the 5800Xpress when I buy a new phone in about 6 months.

rphenix, SIP/Skype/VOIP doesn't work over the Vodafone HSDPA network... I can get on skype and chat, but can't do a skype out or a skype call. Vodafone they must be blocking SIP so that they can continue to overcharge us for voice calls to outside networks.

SIP will work on fring, which runs happily on s60 platforms, it'll work over wi-fi.

I've ha da bit of a mobile phone nightmare lately and somehow I always end up back on a Nokia.  Last year I bought an iPhone and then three months later sold it and returned to my N95.  Six weeks ago I purchased a Glo Fiish (Acer now own them) because I was missing Windows Mobile and the ability to sync with my Exchange server remotely (MFE is 'okay').

So here we are six weeks on and it's unreliable (not getting calls) and 50% of the time I turn it on it has a "must reboot" message on screen and the it immediately reboots.  So, I'm back on my Nokia N95 patiently awaiting either a price drop on the HTC Touch Pro or a Nokia N97.

In short, I bounce between a Nokia and "any" windows mobile device (have also owned iMate KJAM and iMate SPJAS) but it seems the hardware is what lets windows mobile down, although some blame must be worn by windows mobile I'm sure.

Thoughts?
