Ericsson to open fibre optic cable duct production facility in Porirua
Posted on 21-Feb-2013 13:51. | Tags Filed under: News.

Today, with the Minister for Communications and Information Technology, The Hon. Amy Adams, Ericsson announced it will invest to open a fibre duct production facility in Wellington to support the Ultra Fast Broadband Network and Rural Broadband Initiative deployments, as well as future regional demand for fibre.

“The fibre we are producing is a critical component of one of the most important infrastructure projects yet undertaken in New Zealand, which is building a nationwide broadband platform from which New Zealand’s digital transformation will grow,” said Magnus Kreuger, Executive Vice President Ericsson Cables.

“Locating the facility in New Zealand means that our delivery timelines will be significantly reduced, we will reduce the environmental impact of the shipping process and have the opportunity to utilize local skills in production and product development,” Magnus Kreuger said.

Chorus CEO Mark Ratcliffe said “This move further demonstrates how Chorus and the wider technology and communications industry is gaining momentum and aligning to support New Zealand’s transition to a fibre world. The Ericsson facility helps streamline our build programme, but more importantly injects fibre focused innovation that will ensure we keep at pace with developments in technology changes as we progress with the programme over the next several years.”

Alfred Ling, Head of Ericsson New Zealand said today, “We believe our current delivery program of fibre to Chorus; the opportunity to leverage the UFB rollout to develop product innovations and technical competence; and New Zealand’s proximity to Asia where we anticipate future fibre demand, have created the right environment and timing for this investment.”

“Nationwide connectivity is essential for the development of New Zealand’s digital economy. This fibre will have the capacity to carry more data-intensive and latency-sensitive applications such as healthcare and education delivery through to interactive TV, real time business video communications and other data rich professional services.

“The facility will produce fibre ducts for Ericsson’s Ribbonet and Micronet ABF systems, starting in the second half of 2013.

“This facility continues our commitment to investing in New Zealand. For over 20 years we have worked on large fibre infrastructure projects, in partnership with Telecom NZ, the then Telstra Saturn, and Vector, to deliver telecommunications services to New Zealanders.

“Ericsson has an agreement with Chorus, New Zealand’s largest telecommunications utility provider, to supply air-blown fibre optic-cable systems, that is part of the program to build a new fibre network that has begun delivering ultra-fast broadband services to New Zealand.

“Ericsson is proud to play a role in the New Zealand’s Ultrafast Broadband project that will underpin significant innovation and growth in New Zealand’s Networked Society,” Mr Ling said
