Apple tax returns with Mac Pro

Apple Mac ProApple’s Darth Vader lookalike Mac Pro went on sale in New Zealand overnight.

It’s a stunning machine. It looks impressive and it has computing power to burn. The price tag – starting at $5000 – is stunning too. And if you’re a New Zealander, you’ll have to pay 20 percent more than an American to buy one.

Yes, after going into hiding for a while, the infamous Apple tax is back. That’s the name given to the hefty premium New Zealanders are sometimes asked to pay for Apple hardware. Most iPods, iPads and portable Macs sell here for roughly the same amount as in the USA when GST and exchange rates are taken into consideration.

Apple’s cheapest Mac Pro comes with 3.7GHZ quad-core Intel Xeon E5 processor, 12GB of memory, 256GB of flash storage. It sells in the USA for $3000. At the  time of writing, that would be NZ$3640. Add in GST at 15 percent and you get roughly NZ$4200. The machine’s local price of $5000 is almost 20 percent higher.

Prices are a little lower in Australia starting at A$4000 or NZ$4300. So it might be worth a hop across the Tasman to buy a Mac Pro in one of Australia’s 20 Apple Stores. You should have enough left over for a night in a hotel and a decent dinner.
