Action Engine signs licensing agreement with Smart Communications
Action Engine Corporation announced that Smart Communications Inc. (SMART), the Philippines’ leading wireless services provider with 10 million subscribers, has licensed Action Engine’s Mobile Web Services and Device Management software platforms. Action Engine’s software enables SMART to expand their data revenues with differentiated content services and reduce costs associated with the configuration and management of smartphones.

Action Engine’s software will be embedded in SMART’s newly-launched Smart Amazing Phone. With Action Engine software, SMART becomes the first mobile operator in Asia able to offer smartphone optimized mobile web services for Microsoft® Windows® Powered Smartphones.

Initially, SMART subscribers will have access to mobile web services such as location-based and customer online services.

“By combining Smartphone-based handsets with innovative services, mobile operators are recognizing the role of Windows Powered Smartphone software in the growth of wireless data usage,” said Juha Christensen, corporate vice president of the Mobile Devices Division at Microsoft Corp. “ SMART’s work with Action Engine builds on the power and flexibility of Smartphone software. Users have instant, anytime access to wireless services and applications, thus providing for a truly powerful wireless experience that will continue to drive adoption of smart devices and wireless data use.

The Action Engine Mobile Web Services Platform is a client-server solution for smart devices that, by using a thick client, provides a rich and easy-to-use experience, unparalleled network efficiency, and convenient and always-available access to applications and data independent of a network connection.

“To drive adoption rates on smart devices, wireless carriers must offer access to user-specific information without relying on a browser or constant network connection – both of which tend to put a lot of pressure on network bandwidth and degrade the user experience,” said Roger Entner, Program Manager, Wireless/Mobile Services, Yankee Group. “Also required is a very rich and user-friendly information environment, a high degree of network efficiency (which satisfies both users and the wireless carriers), and access to applications and data even when the network connection is not available.”

SMART has also licensed Action Engine’s Device Management Platform that enables Over-the-Air (OTA) device configuration and management functions including: OTA device configuration, registration and software updates used to remotely fix software problems and provision new services, wireless data backup and recovery services, and wireless device personalization services that enable subscribers to download ring tones, home screen themes, images, games and more.

“This licensing agreement with SMART underscores the growing market need for software like Action Engine’s Mobile Web Services Platform as smartphones continue to be launched around the world. Innovative operators like SMART realize that great software will unlock the potential of smartphones for driving revenue and reducing customer churn,” said Craig Eisler, Action Engine CEO.
