France Telecom service uses mobile phones to create travel album websites via SMS
Posted on 29-Jul-2003 20:07. | Tags Filed under: News.

France Telecom R&D has developed an experimental service dubbed “Memoire de Voyage®” that lets vacationers create a multimedia travel album by using their mobile phones to instantly transfer content – consisting of pictures and information on selected tourist sites – to a personal website. They can also add their own content to the site, including audio and video files, photos, etc., and share their personal vacation site with family and friends. The innovative service is being tested this summer with 500 French and English-speaking tourists vacationing in Corsica and the French Riviera. This trial will begin on August in Corsica and continue in September on the French Riviera.

The system is extremely simple: about 150 monuments and tourist sites in Corsica have been identified and assigned a code. To automatically transfer information associated with a site visited (description, photos, slide show, etc.) to the website, vacationers just send the code for the site to the “Memoire de Voyage®” service using either the interactive voice menu or an SMS text message. They then receive a confirmation message that the data has been transferred to their personal “holiday log” website.

“Memoire de Voyage®” also makes it possible to personalize and enrich the travel album:

  • audio commentary can be added (sounds, ambiance, personal opinion of a monument, etc.);
  • additional digital photos can be inserted as well;
  • the Web album can be edited, deleting content, changing the order, posting written notes, multimedia content and more.

    “This is a great way for people to keep a record of everything they’ve seen and done during their trip while maintaining a common thread as they go from place to place. Wireless phones become remote control units that instantly record interesting tourist information and store it on the Web. The service enables totally spontaneous and mobile creation of personalized content. This is a fast-growing area that will prove extremely attractive to the travel industry,” says Christophe Sinquin, project manager at France Telecom R&D.

    “Memoire de Voyage®” will be available until the end of September by calling a toll-free number (from France): 0800 308 303. During the trial phase users pay only the regular charge for the wireless phone call (to either the interactive voice response application or SMS text message service) and the Internet access charge.
