2degrees gets the Google Nexus 5

Google Nexus 5 smartphone

UPDATED: Yesterday I reported that possibly the best Android phone, Google’s Nexus 5 was not officially on sale in New Zealand. Today comes news that 2degrees will be selling the phone. The phone is available from the carrier’s branded stores and from branches of Warehouse Stationary.

That’s the good news. The bad news is that the 16GB phone – there’s no mention of the 32GB version in LG’s press release – is on sale here for $699. The same model sells in Australia for A$400. At that price, initial supplies on the other side of the Tasman sold out in just three days.

The phone is being brought to New Zealand by LG Electronics.

2degrees chief marketing officer Malcolm Phillips says his company is pleased to follow up last year’s Nexus 4 with the Nexus 5. He says: “We have seen a very loyal and enthusiastic group of customers who love the Android experience they get from the Nexus devices”.

The phone supports 4G but sadly, but next week 2degrees will be the only main New Zealand carrier without a 4G network. It’ll be interesting to see how many are sold to customers of other networks.

LG says the phone will be on sale in New Zealand in mid-November.
