New Zealand Police wins award for mapping solution
Posted on 17-Mar-2015 15:49. | Tags Filed under: News.

New Zealand Police were awarded the 2014 Asia Pacific Spatial Excellence Award (APSEA) in the Spatial Enablement category for the agency's real-time mapping solution from Intergraph.

Hosted by the Surveying & Spatial Sciences Institute and Spatial Industries Business Association, and in conjunction with Locate15 - the leading spatial event in Australia and New Zealand, the annual APSEA recognizes outstanding technical innovation, industry projects and professional achievements in the spatial information industry across the region. New Zealand Police were finalists in the APSEA Spatial Enablement category after clinching the New Zealand Spatial Excellence Award 2014.

Inspector Mal Schwartfeger, operations manager, National Communications Management Group commented, "As police, we have a clear focus on crime prevention. This award recognizes our commitment to utilise technology to support mobile, visible and accessible officers so that they can be intelligently deployed to prevent crime and crashes."

Developed by Intergraph in collaboration with New Zealand Police Communications Centres Intelligence Unit (CCIU), and featuring Hexagon Geospatial's GeoMedia® Smart Client, the award-winning solution allows police staff to view and act off operational information in real time. It integrates disparate data sources into one seamless interactive map view, enabling users to build a comprehensive geospatial picture of their operating environment, recent trends and information.

The system acts as a key planning and decision-making tool. It stores and shows current and historic events reported by the public and frontline police with colorful icons representing different incidents. Users can select layers of specific information, such as where patrols are located, what crime prevention activities have been carried out, and how often crimes occur at a particular location.

New Zealand Police CCIU was established in March 2012 to maximize the use of communication centers data within the police, particularly with a geospatial focus. Based at Police National Headquarters in Wellington and located within the Communications Centres Support Group, the CCIU supports a range of workgroups across the country at national and district levels.

"The New Zealand Police solution is breaking ground internationally as one of only a few national police mapping systems in the world operating in real time," said Stephen Willson, New Zealand country manager, Intergraph Security, Government & Infrastructure. "Intergraph is honored to partner with such an innovative public safety agency and congratulate New Zealand Police on this prestigious award."

A long-time Intergraph customer, New Zealand Police utilize a suite of integrated solutions, including Intergraph's industry-leading computer-aided dispatch system, I/CAD, and its Mobile Responder app, which has been deployed on more than 10,000 police smartphones and tablets.
