Huawei P8 launches with screen repair promise
Posted on 17-Jul-2015 08:57 by Bill Bennett. | Tags Filed under: News.

If you’re the kind of person who drops phones, Huawei has the offer for you.

The company promises a free screen repair service for customers buying the P8 phone. To qualify you have to register your phone with the company and the deal lasts for the 12 months from the time you purchase the phone.

It’s a clever idea. Modern phones are usually slabs of glass and metal or plastic. While the glass is usually toughened, Huawei uses Gorilla Glass, screens are still the most vulnerable part of a phone. Broken screens are common and expensive to fix.

When the phone was showed to media at the CommunicAsia trade show in Singapore last month I asked to Richard Yu, CEO of Huawei Consumer Business Group about the free screen repair idea. He said Huawei would like to offer customers unbreakable screens, that’s not technically possible yet, so this is the next best thing.

The P8 phone goes on sale in New Zealand today with a recommended price of $800. Spark and 2degrees will offer the phone and it will also be sold through shops.

The price wasn’t fixed when I reviewed the Huawei P8. At the time I described it as a flagship phone at a mid-range price. On features and style the P8 goes almost head to head with models costing hundreds of dollars more, such as the Samsung Galaxy S6 and the LG G4. There isn’t much you can do with the big ticket Android phones that can’t be done on a Huawei P8.
