Forward Pass is now 41466 available as freeware. The company behind the developer tool is discontinuing sales of Forward Pass for Pocket PC. According to a release, for a number of reasons, and after much discussion, the developers have decided to concentrate on other parts of their business. The developer toolkit is now available as freeware. The company will continue to support existing users through August 2004.
The Forward Pass Studio is a desktop accessory for editing scripts directly on the PDA through an ActiveSync connection. Users can design the application directly on the PDA and edit the scripts on the desktop. The desktop program can retrieve a script from the PDA. After you finish editing it, send it back to the device where Forward Pass will insert it into the application. After the script is saved, Forward Pass will reinitialize the application so you can immediately begin testing it.
Forward Pass applications are stored in an XML file format. Users can view, manipulate, and transport Forward Pass applications using third party XML tools. For example, Forward Pass XML files, created with the .FPA extension, can be generated and validated on a server by ASP or CGI scripts.
When ready to create an installation package for the new application, there's a dialog in Forward Pass Studio that will retrieve your application files (including any dependent ActiveX controls, images, and sounds) directly from a PDA. Forward Pass uses these files to generate the CE Cab file installation.
