6th Annual System Administrator Appreciation Day!
Posted on 14-Jul-2005 09:40 by M Freitas. | Tags Filed under: Blog.

Yes, it's the last Friday of July, and it's been celebrated for centuries (last five years really) as System Administrator Appreciation Day. Mark it in your calendars: 29 July 2005.

The Official website for this event lists a series of high-tech gifts users can give their beloved Sysadmins. These are individuals responsible for maintaining a multi-user computer system, including a local-area network (LAN), wide-area network (WAN), telephone system, or voice-mail system. Typical duties include (but are not limited to!) adding and configuring new workstations, setting up user accounts, installing system-wide software and most importantly answering questions.

The system administrator is most often called the sysadmin, or S.A., or just the systems administrator. Small organizations may have just one system administrator, whereas larger enterprises usually have a whole team of system administrators.

The list of "qualified" Sysadmins include:

  • Computer Administrators
  • Network Administrators
  • Internet Administrators (webmaster)
  • Telephone (PBX) Administrators
  • Voice-Mail Administrators
  • Database Administrators (DBA)
  • Email System Administrators
  • Mainframe Systems Programmers ("sysprogs")

Sounds look a fun way to acknowledge a professional...
