The Telecom New Zealand music store is now available to users with compatible mobile phones - currently only the Sanyo 9000. This model comes with a 1GB memory card to store songs and other media files.
The store offers "hundreds of thousands" of stereo quality full length songs from virtually every genre which can be purchased and downloaded to the mobile phones.
According to Telecom, songs generally take less than one minute to download when in a Mobile Broadband (CDMA EVDO) area, but the system works even when in the Mobile Jetstream (CDMA 1xRTT) coverage, albeit slower.
The Telecom Music Store is accessible from the Music icon on compatible mobile phones.
Licensing rights for each purchased song and download are specific to a mobile phone number. Songs cannot be transferred or forwarded to other mobile phone. Telecom New Zealand says users replacing mobile phones (upgrade or replacing stolen phones) will be able to continue listening to the songs provided the same mobile number is used and a back up copy of the songs is stored on a PC, for restore.
Songs cost NZ$3.50 each, and new users will have their first five songs free until 28 February 2006.
