Zoho has announced Zoho Gadgets, embeddable, gadget versions of the company’s online productivity and collaboration applications for iGoogle, Facebook, orkut, and other online applications that support OpenSocial.
Zoho is a comprehensive suite of on-line business applications. Customers use Zoho to run their business processes, and manage their information while at the office or on the go. To date, Zoho has launched 19 different applications — from CRM to Mail, Reports, and Wikis.
Initially, the company is making Zoho Docs, Zoho Mail, Zoho Calendar, Zoho Tasks, Zoho Contacts and Zoho Planner applications available as Zoho Gadgets.
“Zoho Gadgets are really another way of giving Zoho users access to their data on Zoho and letting them work on Zoho from other applications,” said Raju Vegesna, Zoho evangelist. “A lot of people live in iGoogle, Facebook, orkut, and other online applications and communities. Now, they can embed Zoho Gadgets to gain ready access to their Zoho information from those third-party sites.”
The first six Zoho applications the company is offering as gadgets are available now, free of charge.
Zoho users who visit http://gadgets.zoho.com will find dedicated “Facebook,” “iGoogle,” and “orkut” buttons associated with each Zoho Gadget. Clicking these buttons takes users to Facebook, iGoogle, or orkut, where they can add the Zoho Gadget to their profiles.
These Zoho Gadgets conforms to OpenSocial, and users who want to embed a Zoho Gadget in applications that support OpenSocial can click the “OpenSocial” button to obtain the XML needed to embed Zoho Gadgets in those applications. A generic “Embed” button is also available for all Zoho Gadgets, which displays the HTML code users can copy and paste into any other applications, web pages or blogs.
In addition to embedding Zoho Gadgets in third-party online applications, Zoho Gadgets can also be added to Zoho applications that support embedded applications such as Zoho Notebook, Writer, Show, and Wiki. The company also plans to make Zoho Gadgets available from the desktops of Zoho Business and Zoho Personal.
“We have many users using Gmail for email and Zoho for documents. Such users can now use Zoho Gadgets inside Gmail. Zoho Gadget's OpenSocial support enables us to embed these gadgets inside Gmail,” continued Vegesna. “Users can use Zoho Docs, Calendar and Tasks gadgets inside Gmail.”
