Aptimize speeds up largest Sharepoint site in the world
Posted on 10-Jun-2010 10:24. | Tags Filed under: News.

RM, one the world’s largest providers of education software, infrastructure and services, has chosen Aptimize Web optimization technology to deliver the fastest education portal on the planet.

RM’s Learning Platform is the largest single instance of Microsoft SharePoint in the world, serving learning, assessment and parental reporting materials to 4.6 million customers across the UK, US, Australia and the Middle East. When RM were looking to optimise the ‘front end’ speed of the application, it selected the Aptimize UK distributor, Application Performance.

Results came up quickly and with no additional hardware or application coding, some portal pages loaded three times faster.

Aptimize automatically and continuously cuts the workload of RM’s servers, typically reducing 50 page elements down to 23. This means RM’s 60-strong development team now avoids the constant manual effort to ‘hand tune’ Web pages and can focus on expanding the functionality of the platform, saving months of effort.

Brian Gibson, Technical Architect at RM said “RM’s Learning Platform serves a demanding audience; schoolchildren, their parents and teachers, around the clock. Optimising response times is important to prevent frustration or even classroom disturbance. Can you imagine the impact performance can have if you are a teacher in front of a class, asking the class to work, while waiting for a response from the network? Aptimize provided instant value, reducing even our slowest pages from load times of seven seconds to just over two. Now as we build and refresh the portal, Aptimize’s ability to improve Web speed ‘on the fly’ means we can be sure it will continue to scale up.”

The plan is to expand the use of Aptimize to new RM territories such as Australia and the US, as well as to speed up other parts of RM’s online infrastructure including the Management Information Systems.

Russell Lukes, MD of Aptimize’s UK distributor Application Performance, said: “RM is a clear world-leader in Education –. We were delighted that Aptimize has been recognised by such an important player as an application that is making a difference to millions of users.”

Aptimize is a New Zealand-based company. Geekzone uses Aptimize WAX for ASP/ASP .Net websites.
