We tested it today on a collegues K-Jam and it worked there too - pre AKU2.

It was a feature that was snuck in, to be fair. Many customers did not like the concept that a PDA can't be switched off like a mobile phone. So the operators asked HTC to implement, and it just sat and sat.... until the Wizard/Prodigy samples came with it and it was discovered by accident as you did!
