Richard Stallman comments on Bill Gate's retirement

, posted: 7-Jul-2008 01:59

Richard Stallman, the founder of the Free Software movement, had the opportunity to write an article for BBC on Bill Gate's retirement. In it, he manages to succinctly summarise all he sees wrong with the proprietary software model. It's a good read to get a quick summary of his points. We are reminded again that Stallman sees properietary software a serious and unjust social system.
The most important thing that Microsoft has done is to promote this unjust social system.
And further:
Microsoft, Apple, Adobe, and the rest, offer you software that gives them power over you. A change in executives or companies is not important. What we need to change is this system. ...Gates may be gone, but the walls and bars of proprietary software he helped create remain, for now.
Because of the article's shortness, he was not able to explain in detail why free software is superior. He has done that in various essays in the past, though. For those of you interested, you can find many of them here.

I actually came across that article on the BBC site, read it and thought it was the most puerile, mean-spirited drivel I had seen from anyone in a long time.

Despite appearances to the contrary Stallman is clearly very, very small man.

Well, you'll be able to tell him to his face. Richard is touring NZ in August.
