sbiddle: I don't see why people rely on a STB and recorder combination to record shows. If you want to record Sky go with a fully integrated DVB-S2 tuner PC based card reader or a 3rd party STB and avoid all the issues that go with having multiple devices.

Remember the dreaded 17xx card problem still exists. I have that, over a year ago my STB suddenly died after around 9 years of service and seemed to take out the smart card with it, the Sky tech came around and replaced it with the small silver STB that I asked for, and another 17xx card .... Sure I could get a Sky PVR to force a card change but I'm already paying too much for Sky (plan to cancel it sometime soon was mostly waiting for F1 to finish which it has now). Plus there's always the risk the cam solutions will suddenly break as I believed happened with Foxtel in Australia last year (and from my read is still unresolved) so you ideally at least want the option to fall back to STB+blaster+recorder. (There is even the slight risk that cards used in cams will suddenly start dying as I believed has happened in Europe. I don't personally think that level of anti cams is likely here but it still it highlights the fact tuner+soft cam solutions carry their own risks and problems.)

In any case, as others have highlighted if you do want an Igloo box/Sky lite, STB+blaster+recorder looks to be the only option for a long while.

Jaxson:
JimmyH: It's very easy to book a show on the STB and then set the recorder to grab it. The recorder means I can painlessly:

Watch it back in glorious SD resolution and stereo sound?

There is that. But the Panny box seems to do an OK job with grabbing the SD feed, and the pciture is actually decent. I'm happy with the way it works - plus I don't have surround sound hooked up anyway.

Moving to MySky - and capturing HD video with 5.1 sound is something I'm contemplating for next year. Have already assembled most of the needed hardware (except the MySky), it's more a case of getting round to it.

For those that watch sports ( and movies) , there maybe something in the pipeline for Microsft Xbox 360:

16.IndieFlix (Australia, Canada, Ireland, New Zealand, United Kingdom, United States)

17.Livesport.tv (Austria, Belgium, Germany, Denmark, Spain, Finland, France, Ireland, Italy, Netherlands, Norway, New Zealand, Sweden, United Kingdom) .

Wether this will encompass Ruby, League, Soccer, NFL, F1 etc remains to be seen. Probably wont be Rugby or League due to the Sky contractual arrangements, but for the lesser, but still loyal followers of US-based sports that are not seen outside of Sky, this could be a winner.

Apologies if off-topic, but I did note that there were grumblings in the forum about the consumer-unfriendly charges of the sports PPV's ...

sounds cool.

I'm guessing there will be some way to region-unblock it to watch, say, the rugby in a region where no local tv company owns the rights so livesport.tv can show them?

Unfortunately it won't be the sport the majority of us watch as that will be locked down by the RFU and NRL pay TV deals.

I think from around page 24 you will see some personal comments from people using it - including myself.

What specifically you want to know?

Fair enough. I have to say mine is powered on (well, it goes to sleep every day at 4am) but the TV is routed to show the HTPC. Only curiosity leads me to check what's on the other channels. once a week.

Might take with us on a road trip, but that's pretty much it.

it sounds like TiVo deja vu except as a device TiVo is very good, as a service in NZ it is rubbish.
