I asked them about HD content on Igloo.

"Thanks for your email regarding IGLOO channels.
We are very excited about offering Kiwis more choice and flexibility than ever before and are on track to launch in the first half of 2012.
IGLOO is only available on the digital terrestrial network and you will need a UHF aerial to receive the service along with the IGLOO set top box. You can check your coverage area on: www.goingdigital.co.nz
The IGLOO set top box will be available for RRP $199 (which includes a 30 Day Channel Pack at no extra cost upon registration) and additional 30 day channel packs will be available for purchase RRP $24.99.
The High Definition Free-To-Air channels will be in High Definition on IGLOO however all other channels are in Standard Definition only. To view High Definition content, you will require a HDMI cable.
Thanks for showing interest in IGLOO and if you'd like to know more, register your details on our website so we can keep you in the loop on all things IGLOO."

Is it just me or is the wording "Available in the first half of 2012" imply that a lauch will be within the next 14 days - or do I have my sense of first half / second half wrong?  (May be tax year, rather than calendar year?)

To launch product you need hardware. This month they are getting EMC compliance testing done so it is not ready yet. Running a bit late.

Updates on delayed launch and PPV costs:

The launch of new "stripped-down" pay-television service Igloo, which was expected to go on air this week, is likely to be delayed by up to a month.

Chaz Savage, chief executive of the Sky Television and Television New Zealand joint venture, said Igloo would be trialled by 25 consumers from today but the service wasn't likely to be generally available this month as planned.

Igloo customers will be able to watch All Blacks, some Super 15 and Warriors games and some other big sporting events for about $14.95 per match. Igloo has not yet decided whether to offer any Phoenix football games on demand. That pricing could change, based on take-up, Savage said.

There will also be a selection of about 1000 movies costing $4.99 to $6.99 and about 200 television episodes - such as Fawlty Towers and The Office - priced at $1.99 each.

Hmm... Rugby/Warriors at $15 a pop.
Currently full Sky sports is at least $75 or so, which is only 5 matches at $15 each.
And given that $15 is on top of the base $25 or whatever it is, means you're down to paying more than 'real Sky' if you buy more than 3 additional sports matches per month.

So for me, that's not going to work. Especially if F1 is not an option either. Sorry, nothing to see here for me.

Technically you can have Igloo without the 11 channel pack and still purchase PPV sports and movies etc.

OK thanks, maybe I should read about it properly? Embarassed

What's the deal with this approach?  Do you just get it and have opportunity to pay for addons, or do you pay for the unit as a one off charge, or do you pay less than the $25 or whatever it was monthly etc etc?

Presumably the Igloo STB comes with a Videoguard card.
Are there any 3rd party DVB-T STB's available with a Videoguard reader/CAM and PVR to USB, and if so could they be used with Igloo?

From my understanding, you purchase the unit for $199. This comes with the 11 channel pack free for 30 days.

After the 30 days has ended, you can add the pack on an ad-hoc basis. Same with PPV content.

According to the Stuff article above it says "People will be able to buy the set-top box and use it as a Freeview decoder without having to commit to any on-going purchases - leaving them free to buy channel packs or programmes on-demand as and when they want."

The Igloo boxes only need to be connected to broadband to buy individual movies and TV episodes but not to get free to air channels, pay-TV pack or sport on-demand.

At $15 per match its way more expensive than hiring out a new release Blu-Ray/DVD.

I read on their FB page that there is no smart card so you can't get Igloo on another PVR.

Personally, i was really hoping they would have a smart card as I want Igloo but also the equivalent of a MySky PVR.

I reckon the $15 per match will catch on, its never going to be for sport fanatics, just those that want to see the odd game. Totally worth it if say you only want a few AB's matches, and not to pay for a sport sub all through summer and the rest of the year*.

*While you can of course cancel sports and then resign later on in the year, a lot of people cant be bothered/forget
