Does anyone know why sometimes we turn the TV on and the screen is Green & Purple?
This used to happen every 6-8 months or so and when I phoned Sky they said just unplug the decoder for 30 seconds and then plug it back in.
This does fix the problem, but why does it happen in the first place??
it has happened 3 times in the last 3 weeks - and I tape a program for my wife every day and it's a pain when she goes to watch it and it is in green & purple!

the friendly people at Sky just said "turn the unit off for 30 seconds"- and that's all very well, but they couldn't tell me why the problem occours in the first place.

anyont know why this happens - and if there is anything we can do to prevent it??

thanks in advance!

When you say green and purple can you still make out the picture on the screen of what you're supposed to be watching?  If so, how is you Sky decoder attached to your TV.  If it's Component, just double check to makes sure all three conectors are seated firmly.

yes - we can make out what is happening, it's just everything appears Green & Purple.
everything is connected properly (component connected through Video to Plasma TV) - but I will douple check.
It must be a fairly common problerm with Sky, because when I've called them they just say to switch the decoder off (unplug it) for 30 seconds and switch it back on. that does fix the problem, but I would like to know why the problem occours in the first place - and Sky either don't know or they don't want to tell me...

I expect you're getting the standard 'script' response from the call-centre agent when someone rings with a fault, it may or may not be acommon symptom.  Reason I suggested checking the connection is that I had similar symptoms once between DVD player and TV.  If it's loose, could be that your power cycle reseats the connection somehwat, only to work itself loose again.

That's the extent of my technical expertise unfortunately, but I'm sure there are many others on this board who'll come up with more suggestions.  If it keeps doing it, put the heat on Sky and tell them to send a tech to come and fix it. After all, that's one of our rights as a paying subscriber.

Check each individual component plug - sometimes just a loose connection/wire will cause the problem.

That won't work.  I've got a MySky HDi, and I can't watch any of C4, Sky Movies 2, or anything else on that transponder - unless I attach one of the SKY SUPPLIED DVB-S cables.  Problem is, to do this, I need to steal the cable off another decoder in the household which then prevents that decoder from working with that transponder.  I've bought three cables with no success (yes, one was a Hills Signalmaster cable).  I called Sky and the rude lady at the other end just said "and you think that's our problem?" regardless of the number of times I told her that it wasn't a problem until one of their installers added a third decoder (by punching a hole in an interior wall and installing a splitter at the end of one of the existing cables.  Worst hack job ever).

Yeah, Sky don't respond to pressure.  And their customer service is awful.

My mums' sky decoder did the same thing, would intermittently output totally green screen with shadowy image. Audio was OK. Called Sky about it.
Removing power completely from box for a minute would fix.
After the 3rd or 4th time I said she should request a new box from Sky, they did replace it promptly, good result overall.
