Got this email from Sky - What are they up to????

his is a fun survey about a new idea in entertainment. It takes about 12 minutes. First we ask 3 quick general questions. Then we present the idea, what are your first impressions? And we finish off asking you to make a few choices. To get started now, click here

If you complete the survey, you'll be entered into the monthly $500 cash draw. And on top of that, you can choose to enter a special prize draw for 10 prizes of $50 gift cards. Or if you’d prefer, we will make a $1 donation to the Starship Foundation or NZ Olympic Team on your behalf.

Having run through the survey it looks like a simular service to Netflix/Hulu etc...

The catch...

You have to already subscribe to Sky movies...

I wonder if the benefit for only doing something like this for subscribers + movies subscribers outweighs offering to the general public regardless.  Being a non sky subscriber (and unlikely to sign up) I'd use a service like this if it compared to iTunes, and if i could run it off my pvr/use a 10' interface.

But by forcing it to be subscriber only, they'll continue to not get my money.  You gotta wonder at the mentality sometimes.

I would say these surveys where you go into a prize draw to win money or they make a [cough] on dollar donation to a charity of your choice are a great way to get marketing data for very little outlay. Imagine if you said to Sky: "Give me the movie service and I'll put you the draw for me to pay $50 every month". Now that would be fun. 

This data about what you like or even better what you would be prepared to buy is extremely valuable, maybe one day we will be able to get paid for it in line with the value that companies place on it.

Having said that depending on the questions making it just for subscribers is probably a good idea. No point asking non-subscribers like me if I want additional services, I already don't want the main one.

Can you tell us what they were asking?

If could access from sky box be better, mysky has ethernet connection but guess cause them using customized software or firmware excuse always is to expensive to get going.

I always get crap picture when streaming on pc, being able to fully download file and play gives better quality, they'd have more control over what happens with file if mysky box was allowed to download. 

Had a couple dabbles with isky, didn't impress me that much even though free, just not the same as watching something broadcasted or a fully downloaded file where playback data through put not limited by internet connection speed.

Sounds like they are trying to work out if there is enough demand for a Netflix kind of service in NZ, and it will probably be to work out two things:

1) to decide if they should launch the service themselves
2) to work out if there is any serious threat to their current revenues should such a service be launched by someone else.

Enabling the network port would be little work on their part, they pay the vendor and get the software. It would be an option they did not take (yet), because few people have the need (yet). Yes, there are lots of us, but we are still a minority compared to the rest of the population who still thinks sliced bread is a great invention.

I suspect Sky would use their box to download movies. It is too risky to allow you to download it via your PC, and they want ultimate control. We are also now starting to get more and more TVs with networking, so they know the risk is there for another company to start up.

They already have Fatso, so switching to internet rentals is relatively easy (comparing to starting a new company with no experience/infrastructure).

I would be surprised if they do not go that way, it is just a matter of time. iSky was just an experiment.
