Stuff reports this morning that a church in Auckland has been fined $1250 for using a cellphone jammer.

There have been numerous people discuss these here on Geekzone, it should certainly be a wakeup call for anybody who has ignored advice and purchased one. If you are creating interference on the network you will be tracked down!

I still argue every bus, theatre and train should be fitted with one. General cell phone etiquette in public places is abysmal.

Maybe you should move to Japan ;) It is frowned upon to use them on trains/buses over there.

Great thinking what happens when that Bus / train travels pass a serving cell

The problem that people overlook is that jammers interfere with the network. You can't just go plonking them around everywhere.

Also, what about the people that are on call most of the time and require access to signal, I always turn my phone on silent and check my message if I get a txt, but here's a scenario.

I go to church every sunday, but I'm a volunteer fireman, I can no longer go to that church anymore because there is a chance someone may die because my church blocks cellphone signal!

In my case, if I miss a call and don't respond within the first hr, or fix a P1 fault within 4hrs, there is a chance the company I work for will be fined anywhere up to $250,000 USD.

Jammers are only good where the government regulates them, such as jails, etc... Even here it should be moderated and tested properly to ensure no leaking outside of the facility

Hospitals??  Your kidding.  I attended a family situation last week  at the ICU at Middlemore and the only way to contact family members was via cell fone..

Pretty sure a 10 watt jammer would do squat next to a 1.21 Jigawatt cell tower =)

I remember quite a few years ago Village Westgate had a jammer installed, in the cinemas you had no coverage but it was fine in the foyer. I also heard they got in trouble for it and had to remove it. It's not to much the cell phones that need jamming as much as inconsiderate users need some education.

Maybe 90 minutes a day on the bus has made me bitter ;-)

um certain areas in hospitals require you to turn your phones off at entry anyhow.

thats what i was thinking of.

Perhaps not the whole hospital, but I do see your point.

After thinking long and hard, it's not a cellphone jammer that I want - it's a taser.

Can anyone help me with that one? DX doesn't list them.

A Taser is classed as a wepon and you wouldn't be allowed it and i dount that would get though customes.

i think cell phone jammers have a place there. a lot of peope out there that just don't care about other people like my old lady for exsample she sit's right out side my window while doing the gardening talking on loud speaker if i ask her to go some where else she gets upset. but say if there were some unfor seen problems with the phone she moves back in side closer to the base station for the phone then i don't got to listen to it.

Public transport people get really loud they don't care about other peoples space talking about everything. movie theaters it allways says please turn your cell phone off but some people dont they just leave it on next thing beep beep beep beep. another minit later beep beep beep beep.
to use it just to disconnect a call wouldn't be so bad.

i know there are some people out there that do the right thing and use slient mode but the people dont dont just spoil it.

do cell phone jammers really damage the network or do they just prevent people in like a 15 meter radus from making calls

Yeah cell phones do my head in, We got a guy at work whose phone beeps a reminder every 60 seconds to say he has a text, we've got all sorts of dance music ringtones blaring away all day at work, and 2 weeks ago a chick was actually using speakerphone on a freaking bus! Selective and responsible usage of a jammer would be fully endorsed.

To top that 3 weeks ago i was visiting my old man in hospital and some inconsiderate swine was playing rap mp3's on his phone in the next cubical, in a electromagnetic sensitive ward.

A jammer wouldn't have helped in that situation but a taser certainly would - somewhat careless considering the room full of pacemakers =)

(apologies for the rant)

15 meters? - in town a handheld will block anyone on the bus next to you or maybe 1-2 rows ahead if you're lucky, suburbs maybe 4-5 rows, out of town it'd take down most of the bus.

In an enclosed space they are far more effective than out in the open. At the end of the day you're putting a 10 watt transmitter up against however many kilowatts vodafone is bombarding us with and if you're getting much more RF power than that do you really want it in your pocket?

I'm guessing the unit the church was using was a pretty decent sized mounted unit... Spose their next step is to wrap the building in copper mesh.
