I have been looking for this for a while, im sure its been asked before many times but once more won't hurt. Currently I have two phones, a blackberry on vodafone contract (work phone) and an old nokia CDMA on telecom pre-pay (personal). I would like to get a personal vodafone number aswell, but at the same time I dont want to be carrying 3 phones around with me. What I would like is, to have an active/active dual provider phone, I am not sure if its possible to have my number put onto a SIM card on telecom, I guess I would have to go onto XT and keep the same number. Has anyone got this working for themselves? or know a phone that can do it?

The simplest answer is no. There are no dual SIM phones that will give you 3G on both networks. Unless there have been something new launch recently the only device of any interest is an Acer DX900 that has a dual SIM and will do 850 3G but GSM only on Vodafone. You'll struggle to find one new anywhere, your best bet is Trademe. *Need help configuring your Linksys ATA or IP Phones for New Zealand? Check my blog post

I know its been discussed a lot but... there is a huge range of multi - sim, quad band phones available in SE-Asia, some of the iphone clones I've seen have up to 4 sims simultaneously... I know there is a lot of the imports sold on trademe, so you might have some luck there, otherwise try to find someone visiting thailand / singapore / malaysia

Fair enough, I wouldn't take what I said as canon, as I know they definately did 4 sims, I never tested the connectibility or anything... just what it said on the back in hindsight I should have bought a few as at NZD$90 - $110 they were a steal if only for a portable TV lol.

Ok so what bands do I need? 850MHz UMTS for vodafone 3g? ?? for telecom GSM? I will have a look at some from asia and the states and see if I can find anything

I will have a look at some from asia and the states and see if I can find anything For Vodafone 2G you'll need GSM 900 and GSM 1800. For 3G you'll need UMTS/HSDPA 2100 in cities and UMTS/HSDPA 900 in rural areas. If you don't need mobile internet, Vodafone's perfectly useable on 2G. For Telecom XT you'll need at least UMTS/HSDPA 850, although UMTS/HSDPA 2100 would be good to have (it's present alongside 850 in major cities). Telecom does NOT have a 2G GSM network. So if you want to go with Vodafone/Telecom XT you'll need GSM900/1800, UMTS 850 and dual sims as a minimum. An alternative is to find an old dual CDMA/GSM phone. You might be able to get one working on Telecom CDMA and vodafone, although you'll need to make sure it's unlocked. Michael

99.99% of dual/tri/quad etc etc etc handsets are 2G Quad Band only handsets or 2G Quad Band/3G 900. The Acer DX900 is still the only dual sim handset that has the ability to have 3G 850 (sim 1) and 3G 900 (sim 2) at the same time. 99.99% of all multi sim handsets are the cheap knockoff handsets from asia. These handset makers are great at mass producing the 2G GSM, which is their target market. Hi There, The Blackberry 9700 works on both Telecom/ Voda networks in 3G coverage. It only accepts 1 simcard at a time but this works and works well. You can also use this phone as a modem on both networks as well. Hope this helps!

This means the 850/2100 will deliver 3G on XT and 3G on Vodafone in the cities. But as above, "For Telecom XT you'll need at least UMTS/HSDPA 850, although UMTS/HSDPA 2100 would be good to have (it's present alongside 850 in major cities)" Also should point out that unlike the acer there isn't any indication that 3g is only support on one of the SIM's I haven't looked too deep but it would appear you can have 3g on both sim cards.

You SHOULD NOT buy a phone for use on Telecom XT on the basis of it doing 2100 MHz WCDMA. You willl get very poor coverage. Don't complain if you do.
