I have had a Galaxy S2 since October 2011 but it has died. It seems it cannot take the NZ weather. I walked back from a friends in the rain and my wife had my phone in her bag along with her iPhone. We put both phone on the breakfast bar and next morning my S2 would not turn on or charge. The iPhone was fine. After paying $55 to get it checked it is Beyond Economic Repair owing to water ingress through the volume button! Needless to say that the Samsung is now off my list of reliable phones although I will try Consumer Affairs to see if they consider it Not Fit for Purpose. My wife is also driving me nuts whittering on about her "reliable iPhone"...knowing I will NEVER buy an iPhone as I hate the locked down policy of Apple.Its only Android for me. I'm thinking of going back to HTC after my excellent 1st gen Desire which I just passed on to my son. I have an insurance claim in and I am now in the market for a replacement with a ceiling of $1k. If I exclude Samsung and Apple what others should I consider along with HTC. I quite fancy the Sensation XE but I don't know if that is the model that Telecom advertise as just the HTC Sensation

Nokia Lumia 800. Should be launching in NZ on Telecom in Feburary else you can always buy from like clove.co.uk or handtec.co.uk. I do - it was not under water. Merely sitting on the bench after we got home. For what is touted to be one of the top Smartphones it sure got beaten by the iPhone this time...not that I will get the iPhone even after that. So far I quite like the HTC X715M Amaze or the HTCVivid -although I am not sure if they are both XT compatible. They are available through MobiCity but I have not had time to check with Clove yet, where I got my last HTC. More reasearch to do here. After the specs of the Samsung its hard to accept less but I am not interested in risking another failure.- at least until I move to Arizona or somewhere drier.

Windows OS Only Android at this stage. I am one of those ardent anti-windows mob and I am not prepared to give Mango a try...at least not at this stage. But thanks anyway

Human sweat from holding it is 'water' and could set off one of these moisture sensors, and some people do have very sweaty hands from time to time. Even having a phone is a sweaty pocket, which is potentially very high humidity could be a problem. Do they expect people to wear gloves? Obviously they do need to handle some moisture. I wouldn't touch Samsung now after too many problems with a range of appliances, including cell phones. There servoie is also Monty python like. I emailed the retailer, when I had a problem, who said I needed to phone Samsung, who then said I need to phone the retailer.

I was in a vadafone store today and they have a new mobile that is able tobe put into water ( 1meter max ) for 30 mins. Samsung explore I think it was called, $599. Better than a Galaxy but not as good as a Galaxy s2. There is also a Motorola defy if you are on XT. John

I think it is just dumb luck the the samsung had the water damage and the iphone didn't. It could so easily have been the other way round.

I have got my Samsung galaxy s II extremly wet in the rain, it is absolutly fine. On the other hand, my freind got a small spray (more like a mist) on his iPhone. Now his home button doesn't work and I don't think the home button does either.

But are their actually water damaged, or is it just that the indicators have gone off. Apples has one deep down the earphone soket, and I think one in the usb connector. But samsungs may need more accessible to moisture. Humans are largely made of up water, and release litres of water during the day in sweat. So it doesn't sound like some of them are really made for human use.

I think the Op is over reacting a tad and don't believe its because its a Samsung. I take my SG2 when i'm cycling and its always damp from rain or sweat and is going great. Likewise my Samsung Captivate was great as well. Maybe the Op should find out exactly what happened first before generalising about a particular brand. Galaxy S4 I9505 Wanam MEA

my Galaxy S fell in the toilet recently and survived. My son's Iphone got a small bit of rain on it and died. Just bad luck but you will be struggling to get a better ph than the Galaxy S2. Just unfortunite that water got in. Could have been the way it was in the handbag. There may already have been some drops of water on it and the walking / running / swinging motion of the bag may have just happned to make the water drop/s move in the wrong direction. mxpress

Best thing to do if you drop a phone in water is to immediately remove the power source to prevent electrolisis from destroying the internal tracking, oh wait, you cant find the battery in the iphone, ahh well. Cyril
