I have just been in the snazzy new Dick Smith store in Manners Street in Wellington and noticed that they have a section selling Parallel Imported mobile phones. I also noticed that they don't have any Vodafone ones and a search of their website results in the same. Oh how times have changed!

They have really dumbed down and reduced their product range from what I have seen.

Grant01: A new store? I thought they were slowly?closing down.?? I don't think they are closing down, but I had heard that they could be thinking of selling. Currently I believe it is owned by Woolies Australia.

Grant01: A new store? I thought they were slowly closing down. Strictly speaking, I think the new Manners Street store should not be considered a new (additional) store as such, as they seem to be merely relocating from their original store across the road to this one that is bigger.

Given that mobile phones aren't generally locked in NZ (apart from "skinny" of course) and there's not really any discounting on new non-contract handsets, I've never really understood why the shops have sections for telecom phones, vodafone phones etc. They don't do the same for TVs, i.e. have TVNZ TVs, TV3 TVs, Sky TVs etc. So why do it for phones?

well if you got a 2Degrees phone for example, you know that its going to work 100% on that network and it has all its settings already in it etc makes it simple for consumers. plus the retail displays look nice hehe :)

Parallel imported phones are the big news here... interesting to see them move away from the 'big players' somewhat. Still, if they're not happy with how the market is progressing, I guess they're happy to trial this approach? Re: closing of stores... Christchurch has 3 closed stores that I know of, but all 3 are due to the earthquake (Manchester St, Colombo St and now the Northlands Mall store). I don't believe they have that many left here? And yes, there have been numerous articles that note Woolworth's desire to slim down the stores for sale, only a few of the closures are said to be happening in NZ though, most will disappear from the Australian side of the business apparently.

They recently (3-4 months) finished doing up the Porirua store, after the changes, they had only Telecom, 2 degrees and Parallel Imports also.

This is what i've heard also in regards to store closures, the NZ stores aren't going anywhere and the company going up for sale is mostly media hype (i think noel leeming is in debt and has been up for sale for years or something?) And these phones have been around for nearly 6 months from what i've seen in the hamilton stores, the iphones and galaxy s II that they have bought in have mostly been parallel imports from what i've seen (i know some of the SIIs they sold actually come with a dick smith charger, an easy telltale sign of a parallel import. I think its fine if its going to drive costs down and they can still repair them locally.
