CONSUMER WARNING

TiVo's are so bloody wonderful that you risk just spending all your day watching tv and playing with the cool features.

Humans need exercise and TiVo's are a health risk in that regard as running and programing your TiVo from your phone can be very hazard-is in built up areas with traffic on the roads.

Potential buyers should also consider how many units they will need before purchasing and this can impact cost and family budget.

The assumption that your house only needs 1 unit is just wrong and the manufactures are misleading to even suggest this and the issue has, or will be raised with ComCom shortly.

Wifes and children seem to assume some kind of entitlement to Dad's TiVo once they've mastered its operation.

Consumers should also be warned that local distributor, Hybrid, have a clear policy to shame competitors by provider levels of service that other STB owners can only dream about.  This kind of service could lead to new expectations being established in the New Zealand market.  Such public shaming can not be tolerated.

In summary - TiVos are a clear danger to the heath industry which profits greatly from illness caused by consumer devices that stress consumers.  They also provide a level of enjoyment beyond expectation and can cause family disruption as everyone wants a bloody TiVo!

;)

He, not according to consumer who said tivo is rubbish due to high power consumption. Didn't matter that it's functionality is great.

That's an interesting point, I haven't put my power meter on it to actually see what it does use.

Given how warm the room is since we got it, you could be right that it's just chewing though the power...  though I suspect that's got more to do with the wife having the heat pump going all day while our son watches shows and ponders how to explain to his farther why the movies I recorded seem to have vanished!

Who is still selling them?

Noel Leeming isn't.

I need to try and replicate your research, in the interest of science of course.

Bond and Bond and Noel's but good luck finding stock.  There were 3 left on the floor in Northwood when I was there 3 weeks ago.

Someone said something about a new model.  From what I understand, I really wouldn't recommend that to a mate...  I lost my TiVo for hours while my wife learnt all the features...  but what's worse, now she knows stuff I don't and lords it over me "oh I can record by name", "Oh I set up the programs in folders so 'you' can find them easier"

Na mate...  go buy some beer with your free cash.

Haha, nice one. Was all ready to leap to the defence of my wife's best friend (no not her cat, or me).
Excellent points you make, although you neglected to mention lack of sleep..."I've only got 13 more programs to clear from the list, then I'll go to bed"..."but can't you just ignore or delete them?"....

My wife hates our TiVo, we allegedly don't talk any more in the evenings, as there are no ad breaks!
First World Problems eh!

Cheers,
Joseph

I have almost given up on tivo.  Reading all trouble people have with them.  I had bought 2, 4 months back. Used 1 of them other as spare for 2 months before using it as I liked it.  Well the first 1 went into a reboot loop.  Switch power off for hour then start up and goes through startup to the how wonderful tivo is and reboots.  Left off for 10 hours start up works fine for 4 hours then reboot loop again.   May be great idea and functions but I want better reliability

Hi Gilco2,

Take it back to the store you got it from or contact Telecom NZ support.

yes, Yes, YES, YES

I spent some time reading the T-Box thread on here before deciding on a TiVo.  I could get a T-Box for nothing.

Everyone should invest in one of those if the comments in the T-box thread are to be believed.  As I said above, the mental health industry are all over that product!

That had to be the worst review ever. They were actually reviewing STBs, so they were comparing apples with oranges, as a tivo is a PVR. I believe MySky ranked about the same as the tivo in terms of power consumption. Obviously something that can record to a hard drive is going to use more power, duh.

Dan.  What do we do with these units when they die out of warranty??  My first one died at 11 months and was replaced no questions asked.  The replacement no doubt a refurd has been going well for the past 8 months but I worry ..

I'm getting a TiVo tomorrow (well, that's the plan). Not saying exactly where until after I buy it, lest some stalker get's in before me.

Have both My Sky HDi and T-Box. Can't really comment on T-Box performance to be honest. At the moment it's just sitting there as a rather large paper weight. Useful for driving the spare TV - when it's working of course. Gave up trying to successfully record scheduled stuff on it, crashed too many times.

They've even got that one covered by the use of the 'recently deleted' folder, so you can get them back.

If it's dead when you turn it on, return it and get another one.  They seem to be fine IF they go, and most of them are going fine out of the box.

CGA covers you long past any store warranty but if they can't fix it or replace it they could just refund your purchase price.

Yes a new model will no doubt come at some stage but that's a silly reason to hold off IMO.  There's simply no way a new one will be sold at the clearance price these existing models are being sold at, so once again, not an apples with newer apples comparison.

They aren't perfect, but I challenge anyone to offer a new alternative at $100 - $300 that has it's own hard drive, two genuine HD tuners, included wifi capability and a web interface booking system etc....

This is an unusual feeling for me - liking a thread that Don started and even agreeing with it. I feel kind of dirty...
