I'm also irritated that the drive runs all the time - esp given there's only 1-2 programmes a week on FV that I'm interested in, running a harddrive 24/7 when these are all I want seems silly. I pretty much keep the Tivo powered off (at the wall) because of it, and am close to replacing it with a different PVR - probably one of the Panny blu ray recorders.

It's clear that some people value this functionality, and others dislike it. The perfect solution would seem to be putting something in the settings so you can enable or disable it as suits you.

I agree JimmyH. I've turned off the suggested recordings feature and I don't care much for the live buffer. Personally I'd prefer it dropped to a real standby, waking up to record scheduled programs only.

Funnily enough my brother has just contacted me today to tell me his tivo has kept crashing this evening and went to a grey screen. It's only 4 months old, and was a replacement for a DOA machine. I told him to give tivos number a call to get it replaced.

I don't think it is buffering all the time, as sometimes when I switch it on without changing channel, there is no buffer on either tuner.

Switch it on?  There is only one way to switch them off, and that's at the wall.  If its powered on then it is recording on both tuners constantly (unless you change channels).  Personally don't see this issue, and having that time buffering is kinda the point of having such a device.   Use it all the time, and love it!

I meant switching the TV on. Doing that also sends a command to the tivo, as you will see that an orange light appears on the tivo when you press the tvs power button, which I presume wakes something up in the tivo, but maybe not?

My TiVo is 18 months or so old, and I wouldn't think of giving it up. Any of you guys who no longer want yours, feel free to pass it my way, I'll give it a good home...

PimpMyMagic:
I thought MySky had the "pause live TV" functionality, wouldn't that require a constant cache of the data strem?

No. It would only start recording from when you selected "pause" and display s freeze of the first frame.

The limitation would be that you would not be able to rewind to a prior point, as you can on a TiVo.

The Mysky can buffer up to 60mins on the main tuner. The time is adjustable or can be switched off in the setup menu.

Can't help but wonder why anybody would want to switch off the live buffer and the suggested recordings. Its the whole point of Tivo. Maybe if you dont like these features, Tivo is not for you.

We never use either feature, but TiVo is definitely for us. Agreed they are excellent features, if your wife doesn't already have 30 or so Season's Passes set up. Suggestions are particularly good when you never really see ads, or for channels you might not otherwise watch.
Also, any unwanted TiVos will be welcomed into our family.

Love my TradeMe TiVo - particularly now the EPG is working on all channels.  Considering getting another one.  Not interested in paying for Sky.

I agree  I've been 8 months without MySky - havent missed any of the Sky channels, and I actually prefer the Tivo.

Tivo = big piece of junk..
Honestly I got it when it first came out paid 799 though telecom
Had 3 returned one with funny sound, one where the picture would go on and off
and another one where the channel line up was bung everyday

In the end they told me to keep it and credited me the money

So i use it in my room. I have the HNP but dont use that now

Have my sky but wont be paying that when it goes full price haha

Tivo has great fuctions etc for the price but omg the problems

The appeal of TIVO to me has been the price and not much more. I personally don't use the web component so really any PVR with series link would keep me happy.

I still don't see why anyone would be paying for Sky unless:
They wanted live sport, (or some other content that's Sky supplied only), or
Lived outside a freeview HD terrestrial zone and wanted HD content.

If you're after a recorder that records the free to air channels only, then any freeview PVR should satisfy this requirement?

I loved the tivo features but they seem to have so many problems

Never had one problem with video recorders years ago that cost the same and lasted ten years

Maybe the new tivo will be better

I will change to vodofone next and get a free my sky
then im only payin 45 a month

I love my sky shows.... but freeview looks to be getting better

BUT i wouldnt pay 80 or 90 a month for sky
