old3eyes: I notice that Dan from TiVo never answered my question about why these were dieing with the GSOD.. A guy in Australia who fixes those out of warranty says that 9/10 times it is the HDD. It would be interesting to hear an official answer though.

It would be interesting to hear an official answer though. well maybe I will take the hard drive out of the one that is rebooting and put it in the one with gsod and see what happens. Of course it will then void any so called warranty anyway HTPC AMD A4-5300 cpu, Gigabyte ga2fa75m-d3h motherboard, , 4GB DDR3 ram, onboard graphics. Hauppuage HVR 3300 tuner, Antec 2480B case, Windows 7 home premium 64 bit using media center

well I am not opening mine just yet. With both units unplugged for 10 hours faults were still there. Did for 2 days and fault still there. The one with grey screen would show the orange screen for few seconds and then grey screen. Been unplugged fro approx 2 weeks and decided to try yet again and this time it has actually started up and is working. Strange that. Keep fingers crossed that it will keep working but wont be surprised to find it grey screen again in a couple of hours. HTPC AMD A4-5300 cpu, Gigabyte ga2fa75m-d3h motherboard, , 4GB DDR3 ram, onboard graphics. Hauppuage HVR 3300 tuner, Antec 2480B case, Windows 7 home premium 64 bit using media center

None of the units I dealt with with GSOD it fixed. no never fixed it. As I said been almost 2 weeks disconnected now and was going to swap the drive out of the rebooting one just to see if that worked but first since the unit with gray screen was still in cabinet just with power cable disconnected thought to plug it in. Should have seen my surprise when the sunrise screen stay on and then my mouth hanging open when it actually started up. You said yourself in another thread it's a basically a PC and it only takes a few screws removed to take off the cover. I did it with my last one when it died. Besides to legally repair an appliance you need to have registration as an electrical appliance repair person.

well amazingly the one that had grey screen is still working fine so now 24 hours and all good. twice had left it off for minimum 10 hours and still grey screen now after being off for weeks it works. Remember that PC's power supplies are self contained. ~ even by opening the computer case you can't get access to the power supply internals. On electronic devices such as amplifiers, DVD players etc you are often technically exposed to mains voltages and/or capacitors that can pack a punch.

I guess he is referring to the Electrical safety regulations 2010, part 2. Also taken from the Act below. "Under the Electricity Act 1992 Electrical Service Technician (EST) registration is required for a person to carry out prescribed electrical work, involving the maintenance of electrical appliances, in their own right. EST registrations are normally issued with one of the following limitations: The maintenance of electrical appliances rated up to 230 volts, single phase supplied via plug and flexible cord. The maintenance and replacement of electrical appliances and fittings rated up to 460 volts including their disconnection from and reconnection to permanent wiring."
