Topic # 111473 4-Nov-2012 19:19 Send private message

Earlier this year there was some discussion on GZ about the four small black squares showing on the main map screen of TV1's weather programme, visible in HD. Once I was aware of them they were very noticable and they sort of bugged me, only because I really wanted to know what they were. I just tried to find the earlier discussion without success - I don't recall the answer being posted.

Tonight the answer revealed itself. It seems that the blue- or green- (whichever colour it is) screen (is it called chromakey or something?), that the presenter stands in front of, is made up of about nine large squares (like tiles) on the wall. Tonight the joins of all the tiles were showing like a large grid of fine black lines on the screen. The four small black squares previously-discussed are clearly at corner joins where four tiles meet. So the cause of the squares seems to be imperfect joining at the corners of the tiles.

My curiousity is satisfied. Anyone else see this?

See it every time I watch the weather on channel One. And every time I think the set crew are retards for not fixing it. Doesn't say much for the management who must be well aware of it but obviously don't give a toss.

Does seem to have gotten worse lately though.

Been like it for months. Yes it is annoying, but it is what happens when you send the office junior to Whitcoulls to pick up a few sheets of coloured A2 paper (green probably) and put them up with some drawing pins! Or that certainly appears to be what has happened.

Noticed it months and months ago.. It annoys me every single time the weather is on. Don't understand why they don't fix it. It looks messy and unprofessional.

Just to see what happens I filled in a TVNZ Programme Complaint email in their 'contact us' web page and pasted in a link to this thread.

The reason this happens is because they literally put the colour green onto one of their studio monitor walls and the presenter stands in front of it. I think this is a horrible way to chroma key as the joins in the screens cause issues. They should be able to pull a croma key sheet in front of the screen.

... and, here's their response:

"Thank you for your message and the link to the 'Geekzone' thread.

"The 'black squares' are an artefact of the video screens used in the current news studio set. The video screens allow a range of display formats in the studio. The studio is used for many productions throughout the day and the screens allow for rapid set background changes between programmes (Te Karere, News, Close Up, Fair Go, etc).

"However the video screens are not a true Chroma-key screen.  Thus corners where the video screens meet are more or less visible at any time depending on the studio lighting, camera setting, etc.   We are aware the presence of the 'black squares' is an annoyance to some viewers, which we regret, and we attempt to minimise their appearance.

So I guess he's saying it's all down to lack of resources/budget and get used to it. Seems a bit unprofessional or am I being too picky?
