Hey Guys,

I've gotten myself a GoPro HD Hero 3 Black to do some arial photography around Auckland. I'm not much of an action sports guy, but since using the GoPro I've pretty much decided it's worth breaking an arm or two just to get the most out of this little wonder.

I've created an unboxing video with some of my initial thoughts, and just an overview of what you get in the box for your $629. Plus there's a quick look at the end at what the GoPro + iPhone app looks like.

I'm hoping to get my hands on a decent RC copter for arial footage, so if you have any tips/ ideas let me know.

Ok, first update with the GoPro 3 Black - its battery sucks. I'm having to take the battery out of the camera before I go anywhere so it won't drain. 

The battery level indicator only has three bars, so I can't tell if I've got enough charge without using the iPhone app connected which gives percentages.

Without the wifi connectivity turned on it isn't so bad, gets around 1.5 hours of video recording.

I can get lift with the camera using a cheap RC copter, but have found that only $400+ copters can lift it with the protective housing on, so a bit out of my range at the moment.

I got two GoPro Silver cams as a Xmas gift. They also got me the "3D Hero System" not realising that it ONLY works with the Hero2 cams. 

But the 3D system for the Hero3 cams is supposedly being released the end of February / early March. I'll be getting it. :-) 

Meanwhile...I put together a 3D rig - of sorts - for my GoPro Hero3 cams. The lens centres are 100mm apart. I sync the two video streams by starting both cams then very quickly clapping my hands in front of the two cams. That's good enough to give me a one-frame match...and then once I have the starting frames matched, I crop away what I don't need. 

I use Magix Movie Edit Pro 2013 Plus for 3D editing. It's a relatively cheap video editing suite. It's written in Germany and is available in both US$ and Euros....though the number is the same (US$99 / €99) so buying the US$ software is a lot cheaper. You just download it, install...and go.

What kind of audiences are there for 3D GoPro content? I've always been curious about the 3D Hero system, just don't get its attraction.

I got into 3D a couple of years ago because I have elderly relatives and wanted to make the most realistic possible recordings of them while they are still with us. So that in years to come, younger family members can sit and watch "old (whoever)" sitting and talking as though they were actually right there in front you....20 years....50 years.....100 years after they are gone.

Now...just extend that idea to any moment or experience....and it's plain that depth adds....."depth".  It adds meaning.

I recently bought a History Channel 3D Bluray, "WWII in 3D". It has recently discovered Nazi archive images and movie footage. The Nazis were really into 3D. There are also photos from Paris - in 3D - on the day the Americans arrived to liberate the city from the Nazis. They look like kids.  The scenes aren't flat "history" images any more. The reality of it all jumps out at you. This additional information has meaning to me. Video without this additional information is less....informative and less interesting.  

Bottom line for me: If I have the choice of a 2D "flat" movie / video and a 3D version with depth and thus more 'reality"...I'll go for the 3D version every single time without fail. 

If that isn't you...then you won't see the attraction because you already....don't. :-)
