I really wanted G+ to work. Finally there is a good iPad app, but there's just too few people using it.
I would be pretty happy to move away from Facebook, but literally none of my friends and family use G+!
So I follow a few science types, and barely use it.

I signed up to google+ and then like many people proceeded to never ever use it

Well with over 450 million people using it I'm sure you will find someone. Leave your family and friends on Facebook and discover new people on Google +

Agreed I like to follow people and subjects of interest, and dont see it as an alternative to FB.  If I want to interact with people I can but there is no need to 'like' pictures of what they cooked for dinner or the latest cute picture of their (insert cat, dog, child).  I think to get the benefit of it takes a little more perseverance than FB but then I just never 'got' FB.
