Well, since we have thoroughly commented on the whole wheedle thing, I figure we should ready ourselves for the next Trademe competitor to launch this week, http://www.listselltrade.co.nz/index.html Post your critique and comments below :-) Let me start by saying... $10 monthly fee to sell things. Um. Yea. No. Perhaps they are going for a different market or something, but people who are going to casually list something for sale are not going to pony up $10 a month! And it's only free until the end of THIS month, way to get yourself to critical mass there, in a month.... righto. --- James Sleeman My hobby - listing small amounts of interesting/useful hobby electronic components hardware and stuff on Trademe for cheap, all good geek stuff for the "maker" revolution ;-) Tip for Trademe addicts: install an addon for your browser to get thumbs for all listings.

Why announce their launch a week early ( to edge out Wheedle) when you can only do mundane tasks like create/reserve your username.. Hit browse, oh no you can't until the full launch ( 2 days away). The name is too long to remember in order and they have not bothered to register the other domains for when people get it wrong ie listtradesell.co.nz. Would be a nice little domain to troll with for someone who wants to put up satire/a spoof (think tardme.co.nz)

I registered ok, was quite happy with a 63 char password including many punctuation characters, unlike another site that I wont mention. Page load speeds thru the registration was fine. Not looked at my cookies for a plaintext password or anything yet. Richard rich.ms

No password on cookies, only a PHP session. Reset password email is a token, not the password. So far so good. Passwords must be at least 8 characters long and contain lower-case and upper-case letters and at least one number. There's no checking on the stated password requirements(except length) during signup.

With a monthly fee this must be for online shops who list loads of stock. If not all aboard the failboat.

I am wondering if this is an off the shelf trading system, rather than one that has been developed from scratch like I think the Wheedle one was. An off the shelf one has the benefit that it has been tested a lot and would be proven to work properly.

They only have sample listings across the site, but you can get a feel for how it works. From a technical perspective, when the page loads there's a javascript function that uses jQuery to set the onclick event for anything with a css class of "disabled" to "alert('This feature will be available in the full launch'); return false;". Easy to get around if you want to see what their site has going on. mattwnz: I am wondering if this is an off the shelf trading system, rather than one that has been developed from scratch like I think the Wheedle one was. I'll give the benefit of the doubt that they are still ironing out kinks and not pick holes, but will point out (and just in case Kyanar is involved here (sounds sort of like it)) the # of listings indicated next to sub categories don't in any way match the actual number of listings in that sub category, and the Private/Dealers/All tabs don't work, producing an error (the URL they go to doesn't look useful either). And I love the hidden copyright notice on the pages... "No part of this website or its contents may be reproduced, exploited commercially or stored in a retrieval system in any form" better shut down your "retrieval systems" now, otherwise known as, your browser cache and proxy servers! Huh, if I have the site open in a tab, then switch to another tab for a minute or two, then switch back, the banner ads (and indeed all the horizontal sliding things) "catch up" by rapidly sliding through all the ads that appeared while I was in the other tab, like the background tab was "paused", that's quite interesting, don't think I've seen that before. Seems to be oriented more to commercial on-line traders. See the: Private, Dealers, All, tabs under the listings search. Believe I heard a TradeMe interview recently where they said the majority of the sales are now through commercial on-line Traders rather than folk cleaning out their garages.

I'm not involved in this exercise, no. But I'd recognise the OTS solutions anywhere, and this isn't one of them.

So far, not looking good for their testing :-/ The site index was showing as "fully open" for me a couple minutes ago but has gone back to the javascript-disabled one now. When it was working, very slow. Clicking Browse gives a choice of only Vehicles, Property and Jobs, the rest of the page is broken. Clicking through any of those three reveals no listings and a half-missing page (view the source and you can see the html just isn't complete, something is crashing half way without an error). Seems its still closed at the moment still.. and some of the links link to http://real.listselltrade.co.nz and some of the links don't work.. I guess something went wrong after their launch..
