Thought I would post about my UFB install. I booked the job in for Tuesday last week. Techs arrived before 8am and had started to dig up the surfice soil to get to the conduit to pull my fibre. In total the job took from 8am till about 4pm, the easy part was getting the fibre to the house, it was the internal wiring and configuring that took longer.

So here are a few photos, I forgot to take one of the actual grey plynth outside.

PIT - The blue cable is the fibre coming in from the cabinet up the road. The black cables show the fibre running to the house. As you can see one other person off this pit is connected before I was connected. From memory each of these service 25 houses.

FIBRE TRAYS - Fibre coming in from the Blue mains and then get spliced into the cable tray back to my house.

ETP - External Termination Point. I opted for a hybrid, they run a cable to the ONT from here that contains both copper and fibre so easy migration can be done to use existing internal copper later. I suggest asking for a hybrid because they wernt going to do it from the start.

ONT - I requested my ONT to be installed in my comms cupboard upstairs as all CAT5 around the house terminates to this cupboard. As you can see they did a nice job of running it through the roof and putting it into my comms cupboard.

I thought wrapping fibre in coils like that was a big no-no.

obviously not.

Nope, it's fine. You just don't want to bend the radius too tightly to avoid damage.

Vibe Communications (I have some involvement with them so thought I'd make that clear) they don't do residential mass market stuff more SME business ISP so unlikely to be attractive to people wanting something for nothing.

Very nice to see installs happening closer to my area.

Interesting to see about the Hybrid as it makes sense to keep the copper lines easily available in case they are required later for any reason.

There has been about 5 installs a week in my area and the chorus guy I spoke to said that starting this week they had about 30 in the area. So things are starting to ramp up on uptake.

Nice to hear, Although It does make sense with Albany getting a fairly good head start with the roll-out on the North Shore.

Where you covered under a Standard Install?

The installation looks tidy! Does it include any sort of battery backup (ups).

Where can we find information on the fibre converter they supplied with the installation?

Do you still require a router (in addition to the fibre converter chorus have supplied) i see the fb 7390 in the background..

Yes a router is required for internet, whether or not it's required for phones depends entirely on whether your ISP opts for voice using the ONT or uses it's own RGW.

There is an option to request a UPS install at time of provisioning but obviously comes at a cost, I didnt opt for this option.

With regards to a router, this is your choice, if your operator uses PPPoE you could just plugin your single PC and configure a pppoe client on your pc and connect, however if you want to connect multiple device and have wireless for instance, then you'd need a ethernet based router, they are pretty cheap, mikrotik's are quite good and cheap these days and have a lot of functionality built in which would allow for just about anything.

Great, so. perhaps this is a new topic? but...

in a current adsl based connection, the 'router' does a number of things
adsl connection (equavalent to fibre to ethernet conversion, in a manner of speaking)
ppp dialer
nat
dhcp
QOS
voip
etc.

which of these does the ONT unit do? Is there any reason it couldn't be either.
a) swapped out, replaced with a router [that had a single mode fibre gbic for example)
b) configured to perform the basic functions of a router in a home network setting?

A few reasons that I can think of:
1) If it is connected to GPON then a router with a GIBIC won't be enough as it won't understand GPON talk.
2) The UFB is a layer 2 service and therefore they probably don't want to get into all those other things that you mentioned even though the ONT may well be capable.

The ONT probably does VoIP because that's part of the deal with the Govt.
