Hi there, I am building a house on the North Shore (UFB year 1 site) Good access from Rd, should be easy install. I want to plan & trench for (UFB) services to my house, but not necessarily connect to a service provider right now. Questions What is the order of events in order to get UFB cabled to an ETP on my house? Do I call Chorus to arrange, or do I need to go via a service provider (but in this instance I don't actually want service yet?) Who digs the trench? I don't mind getting it done as part of the build (and have read Chorus recommendations on this) and may even be able to source the official telecom conduit - would this be ok? I don't know exactly where the fibre runs in the street, do I just aim my trenching from my ETP to the closest grey telecom cylindrical thing at the edge of my property (what are these things called?) Haha this is going to be a tricky one! While it would be good if you could just pay Chorus to do it now they won't have systems for it. Probably easiest just to order UFB if it is available. Otherwise install a conduit that meets their specifications?

First off you won't be able to source green conduit to do the work yourself unless you do it via dodgy means - supply of this is very locked down. You need to ring a service provider and order a connection for the house, a leadin will be installed that can be used for both copper and fibre. *Need help configuring your Linksys ATA or IP Phones for New Zealand? Hi, actually Steve, Green Telecom 20mm (actuallyl 25mm outside) is now freely available at wholesalers, as are the swept bends. Infact you can order most Chorus spec products from the likes of Ropac now, recently I was able to purchase some OJ's. I think there are still issues about getting larger diameter big reel conduit supplies, but standard green telecom conduit, not a problem. As for the OP, if you follow the guidelines for placing the duct and ETP location (they will supply the ETP) and make it so that there is a location to mount the ONT directly inside behind where the ETP is and have at least two cat5e runs from that location to the hub (plus power for the ONT) then you have done as much as you can. Thanks Cyril I can confirm I have identified a suitable location for ETP and the ONT will be directly on the other side of this wall. I will have suitable CAT6 & power feeding this ONT location. But, is it possible to get the ETP installed, cladding penetrated etc during the build, but with no order through an ISP? At this stage, I just want to have it prepared for future possible services. Also when digging the trench, am I aiming at this? (UFB remember) How close do I get to this? a foot or two?

Hi Jax, yes you are still aiming at the existing copper pedastal, the fibre one will normally be put just beside it, Chorus will take care of the rest, so if you bring the duct (ideally with a draw wire or compliant 2pair copper poly sheathed leadin) to within 500mm of that with a couple of metres of spare cable. As for the ETP, just bring the conduit up the wall (around 500mm off finished ground level), and put a hole in the wall for cable ingress just above where the duct finishes (say 10-20mm) again Chorus will sort the rest out when they do there bit, if they need to adjust the duct height is a minor issue. Thanks guys, sounds like I won't actually get the ETP on wall without an order via an ISP - but I will do all that I can to facilitate this later. Follow-up questions You mention draw wire - can this just be an unterminated Cat6 cable or is there something special to these draw wires? if so, do you have a link to a product to use? There are actually two of those Telecom pedestals on the boundary of my property. Is there someway to determine which to aim for? Can this be determined by the markings on them? I wouldn't want to run the conduit to the wrong (non-fibre) one I presume I would want to put a cap on the end of the conduit at the pedestal end to stop bugs, dirt etc getting into it eh? Thanks

Draw wire can be anythng - using strong string or rope or a strong twine (what they use to tie the bails of hay - which is what we usually use) as long as its strong it shall be ok The grey pillar in your photo will be the copper network - the new chorus fibre ones are green pedastal box - but imho best to run ducting to both copper and fibre networks

And as for a capping just some electrical tape over the end of the duct is more then enough

Cbfd: Draw wire can be anythng To Clarify further A draw wire is an existing wire or string / rope within a pipe. When you want to run a new wire or cable through a pipe or wall, you tie it to the draw wire at one end, and pull it through then do some re-tying and pull the draw wire back into place for another cable to be pulled through at a later time. I had a look at the property and couldn't see a green fibre pedestal near my copper grey one (photo above) I drove down the road a bit and took the below (poor) photo - is this one on the left?
