ajw: Where are all the heavily subsidised in price handsets?.

http://www.livingskinny.co.nz/shop.php

Not here.

I just5 compared some prices to both XT and 2degrees and they're all cheaper.

Perhaps you should also check out the warehouse website and compare.

There are only 3 handsets I can see that are sold by both Skinny and The Warehouse.

Nokia C2-01 $109 on Skinny, $199 at The Warehouse on VF, $149 (on special save $50) on 2degrees.

SE Xperia Ray $529 on Skinny, $599 at The Warehouse on VF.

SE Xperia Active $389 on Skinny, $399 at The Warehouse on XT.

And factor in the $30 you have to pay to get the unlock code within the nine month period.

codyc1515: I don't think there is any data roaming available as the data per mb is n/a.

Yup, it says this on the roaming page.

Thats the page I linked to... anyway, it seems like calling from Aus back to NZ is about 5c/min cheaper (apart from that I think its dearer, for Aus roaming that is).

You said "I don't think there is any data roaming".

I was pointing out that the page about roaming itself says: "We don't do data roaming though."

Ah, I must have missed that. Weird though that they don't offer it, they usually rake in the $$$ with it.

You sound like you work for the opposition.

Discounts of $90 ($40 if on special), $70, and $10.

All for the sake of staying for 9 months. After that you can unlock for free. Or unlock before for $30. With discounts of $40-90 I consider that pretty decent. Not so for the $10 discount but that's only one out of three phones?

Back when Telecom or Boost or whoever it was gave $10 unlimited text was a far better offer than any of these! Pretty unhappy with it all myself really.

And get a free phone here with only a six month contract and $10 minimum spend per month using the XT network.

Isn't that the point though?  If the subsidy is to offset the fact that the phone is locked, then the amount of subsidy would be equal to, or less than, the cost to unlock. So a subsidy of $30 on average would be appropriate. Why on earth would they provide a subsidy that is greater than the cost of unlocking?  That wouldlike giving a $1000 subsidy on an iphone contract, but only having early termination fees of $500.

From the list above, the subsidies appear to be $40, $70, and $10. Which seems pretty good when we don't even have confirmation specifically which phones are or are not locked yet.

Slingshot mobile? Aside from the irony of now being an XT MVNO (after taking advantage of the epic XT outages to lure customers to their Vodafone MVNO services), to quote a friend he'd rather "crush his bollocks and feed them to himself" after the endless billing problems on Slingshot.

sbiddle: Those who have issues with their perceived pricing value need to take a look at the target market of the product. Skinny isn't aimed at everybody, it's a niche product aimed at a young target market.

I am also confused about this though, targeting a market which is basically looking for the cheapest price possible and is often short of cash - Having $5, $10, $20 top ups when people will be spending $4, $8, $16 doesn't make any sense.

Sure if you top up $5 every week for a month then you have enough for you first week next month free but teenagers don't work like that. They would much prefer the $1 now.

Also surely the main use of a phone for a teenager is text, with skinny you can get 3000 for $16/month - sure you get some minutes and data as well but i think the majority of teenagers aren't that interested in those.

That math doesn't add up, much better off on Telecom or 2 degrees.

A friend recently joined them and got the free LG P500 optimus. But is being charged 23 CPM for voice calls.
His last minimum spend for the month was supposed to be $10 but he just got his first bill at just under $5.

You forget that some may not have $20 in one go (yes, shock horror). The ability to top up $5 at a time is key to this pricing model.

I also did a double take at the $4/week pricing but hey it's better than $5/week isn't it? ;)

Seems calling 0900 is not available on Skinny (its says not available)
and their premium SMS rates are strange http://www.livingskinny.co.nz/pdf/sms_services.pdf

Reading it its the cost sending or receiving or both? (all other carries I've found list both) but Skinny is both?
As the ones listed as $0... TXT2GET for free and sending to twitter cost is not specified? or what?

Thanks

Hi guys and welcome. Can you please tell me if you have tested/extensively tested SMS sending and receiving with international networks? People have had problems in the past on 2 Degrees in the past with SMS not being received in one or both directions and it's been a major hurdle for people moving from Vodafone (which seems to have the best inter-operator SMS compatibility or arrangements).

Also with Skinny can I log into your website and get a rundown of usage?

Thanks!
