chevrolux: Does maxnet have their own data center? Would of thought there would be more diversity than that. Granted a 96 core is a pretty massive deal isnt that why DC's have diverse routes for their connection to the world

Yes they have two DCs in NZ,

Services come in via a number of different physical circuits, this fiber cut was not between the ISP and the handover point, but further up in their carriers network who supplies the physical fiber connection, in this case vector.

Just to be clear, only one type of broadband was affected, my connection at home for example was fine throughout, as would have been any other non BUBA service.

DSL in general has so many single points of failure, single modem, single phone pair, single DSLAM at the exchange, and that's well before it ever reaches the ISP. You start to pay top $$$ when you need fully diverse connectivity, something residential users and many small businesses simply can't justify.

If you need reliability you should be having a secondary connection on a diverse delivery medium with a diverse ISP. When I look at our ISPs I don't just ask them what service they can provide but I quiz them about their network ie what would happen if my connection to their regional node were to break, what happens if there was a cut in their backhaul fibre between cities. Even to the point of lets say there is a fire at the Sky Tower and their Auckland DC at the same time, how could they re-route through regional routers etc.

This is why I liked working with Unleash, I can ask the same guy I deal with for pricing and contracts at a strategic level about their network and these scenarios. Whereas with some of the bigger its not so easy to have that conversation with the sales guy and the network guy doesn't want to talk to you or hasn't thought it out.

Glad to hear its all resolved.

Rebooted router, got dsl just no ppp.

Tried factoring resetting and trying on 2nd connection in house (with telecom - works fine)

Will need to call Maxnet tomorrow for a password reset.

Hey does anyone know in your Members Centre if the edit password option works for your dsl connection or if its just login/webmail related?

(edit... nevermind - will need to call them, looked in my online usage and getting a error back from my session)

Sent out by FXY:

At 12:21pm on 4th October a fibre cut in the Northcote area affected the delivery of Maxnet DSL services causing a prolonged service outage. This issue was resolved, and service restored at 7:15pm.

During this time our engineering staff worked to resolve the issue, however due to the nature of the incident resolution of the service required the reconstitution of fibre at the Northcote site and was beyond our control. We apologize for the inconvenience this issue caused. We work hard to provide excellent uptime and service, so this outage disappoints us greatly.

Unrelated to this incident, we have been working to improve the performance of our DSL services, with testing of a new platform being performed with a number of users over the last month. We are now at a point that we are able to migrate the majority of our users to this new platform.

We will begin to perform this migration on Tuesday 9th October, between 12:00am and 2am and will continue to migrate users over the next two weeks on weekdays only, within the same time window. The majority of users will notice only a small interruption in service and will be automatically reconnected after the migration is completed. Should your DSL not automatically reconnect, you will need to restart your router, and then contact our service desk on 0800 629638 should your service not be restored.

Notification of when your connection will be moved will be sent out during the business day prior to your connection being moved.

We expect that on completion of this body of work, you will enjoy a superior level of service, with greater Internet browsing speeds.

No connectivity this morning (WHK/A cabinet, Whakatane, have rebooted modem twice). Is this affecting everyone or just me?

I've just received a credit notice from the accounts department; it's as if my account has been closed. I'll post back once I find out what's going on.

Update: My account has not been closed; the invoice is around changing me over to the "new network" (see gzt's message from 5/10 above at 19:28). It seems that something has gone wrong with the switchover which is why I've lost connectivity, and it should be fixed by the time I get home from work.

Despite what Fyx said earlier, I did not get a notification yesterday and had therefore forgotten about the switchover.

Fyx need some lessons in communicating with their customers, i.e. update your network status page.

My ADSL has been down since 2am, which is very frustrating when your trying to remote into work.
