We are putting in a new laundry, but due to the way the wiring is, will have to put in a junction box which will be wired by a sparky. But looking at them, some have four terminals. Obviously one is for Neutral, one positive and one earth, but what is the fourth one for?

possibly a second live feed, when you have common neutrals and earths (or a switched live)

Either way, don't worry about it as the Sparky will sort it :)

3 phase comes in either 3 (delta) or 4 (star) connections. Depending on where the junction is, it might not need an earth as it is usually a stake by the building itself.

I know a few people with 3 phase at their residence, so not uncommon.
