Just wondering how other people manage their cables, specifically when they are running them in the ceiling or under the floor between devices? I am going to be doing some upgrading of the phone and tv cables in my house and am wondering what other Geekzone users have done? And if there were any problems you encountered? I have been having a look at: Cable ties P clips Heat shrink tube PVC conduit any advice greatly appreciated

My choise depends on the permanence of the solution. There are the nailed cable clips, which are good for cat5 and aerials if your want something permanent, comes in black or white. Cable ties being pretty cheap I tend to use quite often even in temporary ways, once it has the excess trimmed it looks quite nice. You an get them in all sorts of colours as well. Something I havent tried are the velcro ties, although many people swear by these, I prefer cable ties as the are smaller/more compact. Hope this helps, Jon

I use cable ties which have an eyelet for a screw, don't like small nails to hold long heavy cables. Don't know where you buy them, I get them from work but think we get it from RS Components. You might find some at Jaycar, don't know. I'll get the supplier stock code from work if I remember. You can never have enough Volvos!

you could always run a catenry wire and cable tie to that, it works well to keep the seperation from power cables

Hi, like you I'm not an Uber Geek or Ultimate Geek, but when I put some Aerial cable and Cat 5 cable from the lounge to my sons bedroom, I just drilled a hole in the floor at either end and poked it down one and up the other. I left the cable on the ground under the house. When we got underfloor insulation put in it meant the installer didn't puncture it with staples, and if we move I can just unplug one end and pull it from the other without having to go back under the house and unstaple or unclip it all. It's dry under the house and I hardly ever go under there so there is very, very little disturbance

Run many 10s of thousand meters of power, TV, data, PH, HDMI cables over the years, try to keep all the cables away from power as much as you can with out being stupid about it, if you have to go cross ways over it but keep some separation ie not lying on top if it. and stay away from alarm cables if you can. Pin clips, nails and cable ties are a good choice for going around tricky obstacles and easy to use, try to leave a draw wire (spare) if you can, and remember if you do cable tie or pin-clip its really hard to pull out later to make changes or the like, if the area is going to be enclosed afterwards.

Is the cat5 for data? If so, you are best to use velcro ties or cable ties (carefully). Data cable should not be squeezed tight or be forced round too sharp a corner. It changes the characteristics of the cable and can affect performance.
