My understanding with the Flip network is you get free local calling as part of the line rental. My understanding is when calling a calling card provider this is a free local call and doesn't cost your existing telco provider anything (apart from loss of toll revenue) so why are flip saying to me that they do not support phone cards. Surely when using a KiaOra card I am calling a local point of presence access number which is a local free calling number and why does Flip say they cannot support it.

I am a customer of Flip. I can confirm in my town (Masterton) the local access number for Kia Ora cards is dialling fine. Blocking a local telephone number solely for the purpose of disabling access to a service such as a calling card in my opinion would be anti competitive and would be liable for commerce commission action.

Big difference between not supporting them and them not working. if I'm understanding this correctly, what they're basically saying is, if your phone card doesn't work, don't come crying to us about it.

Flip would not support the calling cards, They would support calling a local number / national number pass that point they would not support Systems Engineer Vodafone NZ http://forum.vodafone.co.nz

Not sure how they can restrict calling cards unless they are, as John suggested, actively blocking the access numbers from being called.

johnr: In wonder if they mean calling cards that use Short codes I tried a local access number for Telstra Clear calling cards and it worked fine, however the 0151 short code did not work. It appears what John says is correct, it always is though ;)

Why pay 20 cents/min to call Aussie for a short duration call when I can use a calling card and spend a whole pile less.

To be clear: We don't support calling cards on our network. As such, I've tried to not comment on which ones work (or don't) as we simply don't know because it's untested. Hence no support. Even Kia Ora cards which use local calling are untested. There are no plans to support calling cards in the future. As to why? Much like anything in business - time and money. Supporting anything requires both. We choose to focus of other things like improving our My Account section, maintaining quality service and keeping broadband free. flip.co.nz
