On the other hand, it's owned by an Israeli company. So? Your point?

Disclaimer: I'm Jewish, nothing against a tech company founded in Israel, but fact is you still can't find much background information on Viber's interests. So how can you blindly trust it, just because "it's not Microsoft"?

I should have said I don't use Viber. :-)

The point with respect to Microsoft should be a fairly obvious one. People like competition and when Microsoft turns up the party is usually over for choice.

Viber being owned by an Israeli company is reason for concern. Like anything based in America, you'd have to simply assume their security services use it as an intelligence-gathering resource. There is no way they would leave it alone and respect privacy.

The viber conspiracy theories make for fun reading especially the downloading of one's address book. I have read the official statements as to why they do this and whilst it could be marketing tripe it appears to be above board, I get notifications whenever someone from my address book joins viber which is in my interests

Facebook is far more worrying than viber or MS, it seems to recommend me people that i might know that it can only be pulling from apps I have not authorized it to view (disclaimer: i might have unwittingly given access for FB to do this but i am particularly cautious with FB and deny all of its associated apps)

+1, Well I'm not Jewish but the rest applies.

I find Skype does pretty well without the need for another VOIP client.

As far as I'm aware a number of 3rd party voip apps have links/ownership in Israel. (a colleague seems to think it's reason for concern). But I seem to recall a lot of WiMax kit originated there too......

As I have said before, we gave away a lot of our private space when we bought into cellphone and credit card use.
