Got a call from a friend saying he had sent me 3 TXT messages and he wondered why I hadn't replied, but the point was I had received no notification, either visual or audible that I had received a new TXT. When I went in to my Inbox, there they were, 1 x MMS followed by 2 x SMS. I restarted the phone and all has been fine. Subsequently, the same thing has just happened again, where I looked in my Inbox, had 1 x MMS and 1 x SMS and had received no visual or audible notification. Is this happening to anyone else? Any help would be appreciated!

All new message and missed call notifications should show as an icon next to your battery meter. Tapping in that area brings up a menu showing you how many you have waiting. A message box should pop up as well but this can be closed without noticing if you're in a hurry. I find that the best way to manage these notifications is to put the pre-installed Notification widget on the main homescreen. This does a fantastic job of displaying anything you've missed and giving you an easy way to manage them. Highly recommended.

Does anyone know how long the 'expected' lifespan set by the commerce commision on devices like this is?

That would be a question for the Commerce Commission ;) Nokia has a standard 12 month manufacturers warranty, Vodafone include a further 12 months on top of that, so 24 months in total.

With respect, I have been a faithful Nokia user since 1997. I am all to aware of the message logo on the side of the battery, so my apologies if I wasn't clear enough, but let me reiterate, there is absolutely no audible OR visual notification of the message either arriving or being in my inbox. Just to clarify once again, this has only happened twice and both times when i have received an MMS. Any subsequent message text or mms that arrives, sets off no notification. In order to fix this I need to read the messages, restart my phone and then any new txt messages came through normally, with the normal notifications. Until, of course, I receive an MMS.......and it all happens again. Happy to answer any questions you may have.

Does anyone expect an LCD to last as long as the CRT's our parents had? (I think the Phillips something my folks had lasted 23 years) And to be honest, mobile phones take a hammering. Some never turned off, humid pockets, sharp knocks etc etc.

Do you know when (if) a fix is on the way to process calendar invites (Accept/Decline/Tentative). The invite has an icon indicating it is a calendar item, but there is no button to process it?!?

Definitely a high priority. I'm not sure exactly when but I have been told to look out for them early next year. I assume it will be at a similar time to the portrait QWERTY and half-screen keyboard updates mentioned at the Symbian conference which were also slated for early 2011.

cool, I can survive until then (not a lot of meetings to attend at this time of year). "half-screen keyboard" will that provide the funtionality currently in WM6?

As far as I can tell it will provide a keyboard that doesn't take up the whole screen like the current one does. This is already available for programmers if they want to use it (see the 3.06 Ovi Maps beta) but I would say this update will make it default across the OS. As I'm not on the development team I'm making an assumption going by the half-screen keyboard already available for programmers and the term 'half-screen keyboard' mentioned in the Symbian conference.

"Mail for Exchange" has stopped synchronising (OWA tests fine through WebMail and RPM/HTTP) but presents no message indicating that it cannot synch, any hints as to where the diagnostic logs may be for this? ps. anyone considering an N8 should wait until we see what we get in Jan update as there as many many beta issues (unless you simply can't wait to get a great camera with an incomplete smartphone attached).

Will the updated virtual keyboard work in a similar fashion to a BlueTooth keyboard?

I feel like a kid in a candy shop now!!!! Just got home from picking up my N8.... I got the last one in store and had to fight off some lady at the desk to get in first... YAY

I highly recommend installing Swype. It's in the Ovi store officially for the N8 now. It makes using the landscape keyboard much faster.
